Saturday was enough (dayenu!) and then today happened and wowwwww.

Thank you @vanityfair @savannahdwalsh for so perfectly capturing the joy, the giddiness, the profundity, the EVERYTHING of being with @gloriasteinem and all these magnificent women to talk about film, pleasure, and motherhood. My relationships to art-making, sexuality and reproduction all center around creativity and purpose. So, wow (it’s all I can say), that we got to explore the contours of those ideas and experiences together, with such a feminist trailblazer.

I’m so excited for the world to see @twowomenmovie in the theaters - with other people - because it captures all of this and more. It’s funny! It’s sexy! It’s profound! It’s exactly the kind of art we need right now, sparking exactly the kind of essential conversation we got to have in Gloria’s living room last weekend. It’s point and case of why @itsajointventure was born: to bring films which the Hollywood machine undermines and which we know the power of.

Ok I’m gonna go watch a heated rivalry lookalike contest now— oop did I say that out loud?

Big news! 🎬 IF YOU SEE SOMETHING has been acquired for North American release by Joint Venture. We are so excited to partner with Joint Venture to share this film with audiences across the U.S. (and Canada!).

From the start, this film has been a collective effort. It wouldn’t exist without the talent, grit and vision of the entire cast and crew, for many of whom this story hits close to home. We don’t take lightly that we are releasing a film about asylum, immigration, and belonging at a time when the real-world stakes around these issues are rising. We’re so proud to have found a distributor who understands the complexity - and the urgency - of this story.

In September, I woke up from a dream and sat down and wrote a first draft of a short in one sitting. One week ago, we wrapped that short.

dreamlife has been, well, a dream, from beginning to now, literally and figuratively.

I am at my most joyful and fulfilled when I find a new way to express myself creatively. Directing lit up the little kid in me, pure color, pure instinct. And it was also a bit like coming home to myself. Like arriving into myself. Like having wandered around in outer space and finally landing on a planet where I can breathe the atmosphere.

Such a journey to here, and more journeying to come 🌸

Is there anything ~more inspiring than an afternoon spent in a feminist talking circle in @gloriasteinem’s living room

When I reached out two weeks ago about hosting a salon with the one and only Gloria in her home to discuss the feminist themes in @twowomenmovie — dearest @heymsamelia replied quickly with a YES. After my heart and my brain exploded, we got to organizing.

So many feminist talking circles have taken place over so many decades in this magnificent room, and this past weekend a group of some of the most brilliant brave women came together to talk about sex and caregiving and motherhood and pleasure and progress (or in some cases, the lack thereof), all of which @chloerobish and @catleger tackle with hilarity in Two Women, and which @pennybobette embodies in the film with wit and beauty.

It was an honor, and that’s an understatement.

The whole thing made me so grateful to get to share art, and make art, and be curious, and be in process, and be a woman, and be alive.

Another non exhaustive list of the things that made me glad to be alive this week.

1/2. My forever ♾️

3/4. The play is good guys. And the playwrights note gave me a healthy needed affirmation and reminder that everything we create is, at its best, an honest attempt to capture a moment in time - however messy, however incomplete. Witnessing that in-progress kind of art made me feel wonderful and envious and whole.

We are so many things. I am so joyous, and I have so much grief. I create, and I consume. I am light, and I am dark. So I nurture the beauty in my life knowing that there is equal ugliness.

So even (especially?) when I feel frightened or my spirit dampens, I orient towards what inspires me. A few of those things from the last week.

1+2. Robert Therrien ‘This is a Story’ at @thebroadmuseum full of playful spirit. I don’t think of laughter as a sound we hear in museums but I couldn’t help but laugh, with him, at him, often.
3. A lovely vulnerable interview with @mrrichardgadd in NYT Magazine about the power of art to help us to find ourselves.
4. Scriptnotes pod between @nobledanceroslo & @johnaugust which is so generous in its tactical exploration of the creative process. I pressed replay when I finished it to listen again.
5. The most beautiful space at @op_e___n. Moving my body a little more these days.
6+7. The deliciousness of starting a new book. Especially this one.
8. A weekend hike in the middle of LA that feels a million miles away. But mostly, Rosie reclaiming her time smack dab in the stream.
