Alejandro (he/him)
Executive Director / Artistic Director

Alejandro (Ale) started dancing in high school with a salsa team and later trained in ballet, jazz, and contemporary after moving to Chicago. A queer Latinx artist, he’s been creating authentic, culture-rooted work for over 15 years… long before queer Latin stories were widely visible. Leading Orenda deepens his purpose in uplifting Latinx and queer youth through culture, movement and representation.

Offstage, he’s likely covered in paper mache, cooking with his husband or glued to his iPad making digital art. Favorite Orenda memory? A hilariously chaotic trip to San Francisco involving delays, ocean waves, and laughter for days. Onstage, expect joy, truth, and a spark of connection… even if it’s just for a moment. by @jesus2ale

We’re committed to sharing the kind of space we’ve always been.

A space that protects, uplifts, and listens.
A space where queer, fierce, and free are all welcome.
A no-tolerance space for harm.

Yesterday was an unforgettable milestone. In my 20s, I was deeply immersed in the dance world—performing, competing, directing, and teaching. I loved it, but I always envisioned doing more and working with intention, purpose, and community. Today, I’m so happy to work for Frida Community Organization, a nonprofit serving immigrant families through art and education.

This year, we dreamed up a theater showcase to celebrate our students and their families because they deserve to see themselves in elevated spaces. Yesterday, that dream came to life. I even built an alebrije with my students! And after a 5-year break, I returned to the stage to perform with one of my best friends Obi. Though we’ve shared years in Modern Clave, it was our first time performing just us. This time, it wasn’t about perfection, it was about love, joy, and sharing that with the kids and our community. It was really special for me.
Thank you to my family and friends who came out to support me, many of you had never seen me dance before since my old performances were usually late at night. Thank you to my sister for being by my side every step of this journey. Thank you to Obi, my longtime friend with such an amazing gift, thank you for sharing it with me. And to the love of my life, thank you for putting up with the chaos: the elephant head in the living room, the sewing, the stoning, and for gently reminding me to rest and offering the distractions I didn’t know I needed.

Lastly, thank you to anyone who has ever seen or supported me. I’m generally a happy person, but today I feel immensely grateful for the life I have. If you’ve ever clapped at a show, liked a video, or simply encouraged me, you’ve helped validate this path and brought me to this moment. Thank you from the bottom of my heart. by @jesus2ale

Ten years ago, on our second meeting, Falcor chose me and instantly I brought him home. So much has happened since then. I moved to another country and back, got married, bought a car and then our condo, fell into a wonderful career, lost loved ones, welcomed new loved ones, and most importantly I really got to learn how to love myself. And every step of the way, Falcor has been there with unconditional love. I feel like a lucky person but finding this gift is the most special one I’ve ever received. My aunt once told me you should be celebrated when you come home, Falcor does that and more. He’s been a part of everything in my life. In fact, if your reading this, you’ve probably met him! Ten years is scary age for dog owners. It’s the age when we are faced with their mortality. All I can say is thank you to whatever powers that be to give me this love that I never knew existed and I will cherish every moment past, present and future. Happy birthday Falcor! by @jesus2ale

Yesterday, was a great day. I watched the sun rise over the lake, took my in laws to look over Grant Park, had a BBQ and games, and most of all… I watched @edgarin10 truly feel like he belonged in the place he grew up in as he became a citizen of the US (wearing clothes that represent where he comes from I might add!). We can criticize our country for many things but we must never forget how far we’ve come.

The last photo is when we, two gay latino men, got married (quickly after it was legalized in the US). And now as citizens, my husband and I can rest as equals with all the same rights afforded to straight Americans. I can only think of one other queer relationship that has offered a path to citizenship… just one.

Sometimes the most powerful thing we can do is exist, and I am so grateful to live in a country where we can.

So I’ll keep watching the sun rise over the lake, the wonder in peoples eyes, the grins after a good joke and the love of our family and friends grow indefinitely. And when things let us down, I’ll remember only here and now could we have existed and how extraordinarily lucky are we that we do.
