I finished a digital painting recently that I have been working on for over a year on and off. But the bulk of it was done this past week. It involved transforming the models in the reference image into Luna and Zen, the first couple that @j.z.stoneauthor and I @williamtateauthor started writing together, 5 years ago. I sent the grayscale portrait homework assignment in to the Digital Painting Academy @paintable.cc and then kept going beyond that point to push the illustration and make it truly embody our characters. I learned so much working on this painting, especially this past week. I'm excited for what comes next in my learning and art-making journeys. I'm pretty happy and proud of what I was able to accomplish. What do you think? Who or what should I try next?

Here's a raw snippet from one of Luna and Zen's chapters from a story we call As You Are, one of our many books in progress. Zen is non-binary and genderfluid and identifies as mostly trans masc, especially after meeting his perfect match, Luna, a mysterious girl on the run.

I flipped back through the pictures, smiling at how adorable we looked together.

“We’re going to need A LOT of frames,” I said.

We both laughed. I loved her laugh. I kissed her cheek again and hugged her.

As cocky as I thought she was being at the time, Luna was right. Deciding to go to New York with her really WAS the best decision I ever made.

🎨Day 5 of #oneweekportrait
Challenge by @paintable.cc . Thank you so much for running these challenges! It's been an amazing experience, as always.

He's done! My novel character Dylan's digital portrait is done! It's been a tedious labor of love. There's so much more I could do or wish I'd fixed early on to perfect the overall form of things but wow I'm seriously proud of what I accomplished with this challenge. Day 5 is stylizing and final touches, which I just finished. Day 4 was detail and I was up super late working on it and again this morning. Not as late as last year's 5:30am but 2:30am and starting to pass out was long enough. I decided not to fuss with the jacket and hoodie much, maybe someday I will for practice. Anyway, he's done. He's saved and screen shotted at lots of phases so I can go back and make things different if I want or improve it. But more than likely I'll just start on a new one! I can't wait to start one for Todd and maybe just maybe attempt a picture of them together. That's scary but maybe I'll get there sooner than I think. You never know what you are capable of until you try!

I finally finished him! And I'm really glad I waited til now to paint him. I'm pretty proud of how he came out. I'm still struggling with watercolor and painting in general. There's a lot I don't know how to do or how to fix when things don't work out. But it's getting easier with every painting. #practicepracticepractice

Early summer of last year was when I did the sketch and I did the painting last week. This watercolor portrait was for #sktchy art school's #30faces30days challenge. (I'm just a tad bit behind 😜) Jordan M. Rhodes @jmr_art was the teacher for this one. I love his art so much and I love hearing what's going through his mind while he paints. He has some great tips and insights. Both of my favorite portraits from these challenges, so far, came from his classes.

I tried to learn from previous mess-ups and didn't attempt to fix my mistakes...mostly.

I used GenCrafts @genuine.crafts 48 Color Solid Watercolor pallette with my own brushes. It comes with two very convenient water brushes that are great for on the go. I always keep my palette in my overnight bag (while not in use) with a small watercolor paper pad, which is also from GenCrafts, in case inspiration strikes away from home!

I haven't painted or done much of anything in a while (bad, worse, but also good and very good reasons). On Tuesday there was a paint with me session in @paintable.cc 's digital painting academy for this month's portrait theme. I was late but watched the session live, then later I set up split screen and painted along with the replay. I might add or change a couple of things when I have had time away from it (work on and fix the hand especially) But I'm pretty happy with how this came out! I'm motivated to work on some art for my book characters. ( @williamtateauthor) My kiddo really likes all the colors. It feels great to create something! 😊 My therapist saw it and said she liked her eyes and how she could feel her soul.

I have been doing short (usually) digital painting prompts every day starting Tuesday, January the 20th, having recommitted myself to the @paintable.cc Digital Painting Academy I've been in for a few years now. Check it out if you've ever wanted to learn, there's an amazing deal going on right now! These daily paintings, and the community, have been helping me deal with some pretty intense mental shtuff this week. January community daily art prompts are all animals. The 24th's was "crow," and this is where I was when I stopped for the night. My most complete of the Daily 5 prompt paintings so far. I loved trying to capture the subtle color shifts in the "black" wings. Getting faster, but also wound up going back to it after the initial time limit. It's not so much a time limit as a way to get you painting at least 5 minutes to a half hour or even 60 minutes every day. To build the habit. To get some quick wins, and diversify your art and techniques. I ended up gping back to work more on this one to get it to this. So, this crow wound up getting maybe 2 and a half hours before I needed to stop for the night. Finished is better than perfect, as our instructor says, and any amount of painting is better than no painting at all. But I really liked where I got to with this one, enough to sign it and share here.

Second sketch of the year. I loved doing this messy, imperfect pen sketch of Kyo in kitty form with Tohru, from the Fruits Basket anime. I stumbled on a video by @javicandraw about starting to draw again in 2026 and starting with what you loved before, something simple, and maybe filling the frame with doodles or lines and circles or whatever. And some other videos that talk about being messy, having fun, making marks, enjoying it and having fun, not being so precious with your art, the sketch book, or materials. So, here I go.

New Year's Day 2026! Happy New Year, everyone! First sketch of the year. Of course it's an eye in pen. It's been a while. I'd mostly only been drawing Zentangle like doodles during therapy or working on digital portraits all of 2025, I drew or painted at all.

Last night, I used some watercolor pens to make three flowers real quick cuz I needed to create. I liked them, but the stems came out hideous. Tonight, in an attempt to smooth the colors of the stems, I created a bit of a bleeding mess. But I kept going, leaning into that disaster, switching between dabs and swipes of the pens into watery spots and dry to a plain water brush and back to colors.... and I don't hate what it did. I like it, bluriness and all. I'm in love with the clusters (especially on the right, that were added tonight) and how the initial flower blooms look in the midst of it and even the giant spots of bleeding colors. I learned quite a bit while experimenting, how to fix things, how to let it be messy, and it felt great. Now I have a messy, semi abstract floral painting, and I kinda can't wait to try (and partly "fail") again. So win win. 😊

Created a collage a few days ago with therapeutic tissue paper ripping and layering with some paint pen doodles and dabs and cut up stickers to make an abstract fantasy garden of sorts.
