Everyday mitzvah: בִּקּוּר חוֹלִים, Bikur Cholim 🤍
Parashat Vayera opens with God appearing to Avraham as he healed after his brit. Rashi explains: God came to visit the sick. The Talmud teaches that we walk in His ways by doing the same, and that a visit takes away one-sixtieth of a person's illness.

For today: text, call or drop by someone who's under the weather. Add a refuah shleimah.

Hebrew word of the week: חֶסֶד, Chesed 💛
Loving-kindness. Pirkei Avot says the world stands on three things, and gemilut chasadim (acts of kindness) is one of them. The Talmud says chesed goes even further than tzedakah: you can give it with your time, to rich and poor, to the living and those who've passed.

For today: do one kindness nobody asked for.

This Shabbat: Parashat Vayera ⛺
On a hot day, Avraham sees three travelers and runs to welcome them. The sages say his tent was open on all four sides, so anyone could find the way in. He promised "a bit of bread" and served a feast.
Hachnasat orchim, welcoming guests, still starts small: one extra seat, one invite, one text.

The 12-word habit before your coffee ☀️
Modeh Ani is the first thing many Jews say on waking: "I thank You, living and eternal King, for returning my soul to me with compassion. Great is Your faithfulness." It first appears in Seder HaYom by Rabbi Moshe ibn Makhir of Tzfat (Venice, 1599), and since it doesn't contain God's name, you can say it the second you open your eyes.

Before the snooze. Before the phone. What's the first thing you're grateful for? Tell us below 👇

Hebrew word of the week: Hineni (הִנֵּנִי) ✨
In this week's portion, Vayera, Avraham answers God with one word: hineni, "here I am." Moshe says it at the burning bush, and young Shmuel says it in the night. Rashi calls it a word of humility and readiness.
This week, try being a hineni person: phone down, fully present.

Shavua tov ✨
Did you know? In Lech Lecha, God adds one letter, hey (ה), to two names. Avram becomes Avraham, "father of a multitude of nations," and Sarai becomes Sarah.
One small letter, one big fresh start. What's one small thing you'll add this week?
