✨ New Episode Alert! ✨

Unbelievably this is episode #30 of The Grateful Web Art Podcast and I’m so pleased it’s with the very lovely artist Jez Dolan. Super big thanks to everyone who has supported the podcast up to this point and a quick reminder that if you’re a regular listener please do consider signing up to my Patreon page to help me keep it going (link in bio).

Jez is an artist living and working here in Manchester, and his practice explores the intersections between queerness, sexuality, identity and memory. He works across drawing, film, performance, printmaking and painting, and over the years his work has been exhibited widely across the UK and internationally. His work is held in numerous collections, including the British Museum, Manchester Art Gallery, the Government Art Collection, Bury Art Museum, the Leslie-Lohman Museum in New York, Soho House, the Schwules* Museum in Berlin and the Walker Art Gallery in Liverpool, among others.

Jez was the first artist-in-residence at Manchester Art Gallery for the major exhibition Derek Jarman Protest! in 2021–22, and he’s the artistic director of IAP:MCR, the Manchester-based arts and heritage organisation presenting work across visual and performing arts by artists who identify as queer.

He has recently curated the exhibition Re/Assemble, currently on at the People’s History Museum Manchester until 3 January 2027. The exhibition features specially commissioned artworks responding to the legacy of Section 28, exploring themes of protest and resilience, celebrating queer voices and creativity. These works are displayed alongside historic and contemporary artefacts from People’s History Museum’s collection, including protest banners and objects.

Jez also plays double bass with Manchester-based art-folk troupe Sherpa-K who are performing this Friday, 25 September 2026 alongside the exhibition at the People’s History Museum.

A wild Sherpa K appears!

On Thursday we had the pleasure of improvising as part of The Things We Dreamed installation at @whitworthart

Next up, we’re back at the People’s History Museum for SHERPA K: ASSEMBLE WITH PRIDE on Friday 25 September, 7.30pm: a proper evening of songs about protest, pride, love and all the other things we like to Do Music about.

It’ll most likely be our final gig of 2026 before we disappear for a short while to work on original material - SO! If any of you fancy seeing us a final time before we retreat to the rehearsal room (living room….) you’d best be there...

Best book I’ve read for a long while. Not a biography, not a history, not a musicological text, but a musing on art, life and the importance of making things, as viewed through the work and life of the enigmatic Erik Satie. Tempted to go back to the beginning and start again. Book by the marvellous @fitzcarraldoeditions bought from the wonderful @donlonbooks by @jezdolan

🎬 Join us for a one-off gala event marking the culmination of PROTEST! – Documenting Dissent.

Supported by the @heritagefunduk PROTEST! is @iapmcr
two-year project exploring Manchester's queer protest history and the long shadow of Section 28.

Using Manchester's 1988 anti-Section 28 demonstration as its starting point, the project has gathered oral histories from LGBTQ+ activists, artists, teachers, organisers and people whose lives were shaped by censorship and silence.

At SCENE Festival 2025, ON THE SCENE transformed Fairfield Social Club into a reconstructed 1988 post-demo party. Audiences danced, acted and protested—and that footage now lives inside CONDENSATION, a new magic-realist short film written and directed by Joshua Val Martin, premiering at the very festival that helped make it.

Set in 2010 Manchester, CONDENSATION follows a fresher wanting to attend the LGBT Society, but inherited silence and half-heard histories, born of Section 28, gather around him as a literal cloud.

The evening will feature red-carpet interviews, a celebratory project highlights film, a short documentary by David Martin using march footage and PROTEST! oral histories, the world premiere of CONDENSATION, and a post-screening wrap party.

Part gala premiere, part living archive, and above all a celebration of LGBTQ+ people who continue to resist through remembering.
