On Yom Kippur, a gunman opened fire outside a synagogue in Ontario, Canada. Congregants were evacuated and services were canceled.

The officer standing guard outside was shot. He was standing there because the Jewish community has learned that someone has to.

This year alone, similar attacks against Jewish communities were disrupted in Pennsylvania, New York, Texas, and Alabama. Not one was stopped by luck, but by costly security measures.

It shouldn’t be necessary, but it is, and the bipartisan Jewish American Security Act (JASA) would help fund it. Take a moment to ask Congress to pass JASA at the link in our bio. by @jfederations

@JFederations are horrified by the shooting outside the Sons of Jacob Synagogue in Belleville, Ontario, as members of the Jewish community gathered to observe Yom Kippur, the holiest day of the Jewish calendar.

Jews must be able to gather in prayer and community without fear, and we urge authorities to fully investigate this attack and hold those responsible accountable.

As we learn more details, we pray for the full and speedy recovery of those injured, and thank the heroic law enforcement officer who engaged the shooter and sustained injuries.

We stand in solidarity with the Belleville Jewish community at this deeply painful moment, and will never back down on our fulfilling community’s security needs. by @jfederations

More than a dozen leaders of Jewish Federations across North America leaders recently traveled to Georgia, Poland, and Ukraine with JDC to witness our collective impact firsthand, from delivering life-saving aid to vulnerable Jews to strengthening communities working to build a vibrant Jewish future.

“We should never forget that we have Jewish family less fortunate than us,” said Jason Shames, who leads the Jewish Federation of Northern New Jersey. “We have this responsibility and, thankfully, ability to make positive change in people’s lives.”
