We are so proud to share that our co-founder, Jean‑Francois Esculier, PT, PhD, has been honoured by the Kelowna Chamber of Commerce as a Top 40 Under 40 for 2026.

JF co-founded MoveMed Physiotherapy in 2020, starting as a home‑visit practice. Since then, he has grown MoveMed into a thriving clinic with a team of five amazing physiotherapists and two client care coordinators in our beautiful new space that recently turned 1 year old!

Beyond being MoveMed Physiotherapy's founder, JF is an incredible mentor and leader, someone our entire team truly looks up to.

Locally, he is a Clinical Associate Professor at UBC, where he teaches physiotherapy and medical students. He provides first aid at local sporting events, and educates the public on sports medicine topics through lectures and podcasts but also radio and newspapers interviews.

Internationally, he is an instructor with The Running Clinic, a role with which he has taught thousands of health professionals around the world about running injuries since 2011. He is also an accomplished researcher, with 70 scientific articles on his resume and global recognition in the fields of physiotherapy and sports medicine.

Along with the Kelowna Chamber of Commerce, we proudly recognize JF’s commitment to leadership, innovation, and making a meaningful impact at MoveMed Physiotherapy and within our community! Congrats JF! taken in MoveMed Physiotherapy by @jfesculier

As running physiotherapists, we often get asked about running shoes. Minimalist vs maximalist? Shoes for walking vs running? Should I switch shoes, and when?

Our physiotherapist & founder, JF Esculier, PT PhD has published research on running footwear, and answers these questions in the latest edition of Nutrition Action. Have a read!

NEW RESEARCH ARTICLE FROM OUR TEAM

Our very own Jean‑François Esculier and Bea Francisco just co‑authored a study looking at what really happens to running form during a 156 km ultra‑trail marathon, and the results might surprise you.

We tracked runners’ foot strike, cadence, stride length, ground contact and flight time, leg stiffness, and hip/calf strength across all six laps.

What we found:
Instead of their form breaking down with fatigue, runners tended to:
• Slow the pace slightly, or
• Make small stride adjustments to stay efficient

These changes showed up early in the race and then stayed consistent until the very end. Furthermore, hip and calf strength remained stable throughout the entire 156 km race.

What this means:
Experienced runners likely develop protective physiological adaptations that help them manage stress during long distances, reducing neuromuscular fatigue and muscle damage.

For YOU as a runner:
🍂If you are experienced:
• Adjust pace based on terrain and distance left
• Do not force a pace that compromises your form

💚If you are newer to ultra-marathons:
• Find a cadence you can maintain comfortably
• Train your form both fresh and fatigued
• Build hip and calf strength to run stronger, longer

Download the pdf file, link in bio for the full breakdown!

If you are preparing for an ultra, or just want to run pain‑free, our physiotherapists are all runners and have specialized training in running.

Last week: we celebrated 1 year in our new space.
This week: we celebrate JF turning 40!

To know him is to know that the achievements are impressive - but the person behind them matters more.

Internationally renowned clinician and researcher.
Respected across the profession.
But what matters most to him is people.

Clients.
Students.
Team.
Community.

We’re lucky to be part of the vision he started - and even luckier to see the human behind the achievements every day.

Happy 40, JF. The legend who’ll never call himself one. 💙
