[11] I think it’s beautiful that film is having a kind of renaissance in recent years, and that as new generations reach for the medium they find room to breathe in the physicality and character found in its creative limitations. However, all too often those cherished photos baked into the film negative find their home as scans collecting dust in an app. That ain’t it, boss.

If you haven’t heard, let me have the pleasure of informing you that photographs were never meant to live in your camera roll or on your hard drive. Their final resting place was originally meant to be physically printed and published, displayed and enjoyed. I believe that’s where their presence truly lies.

So here’s a peek behind the curtain into a process that’s become dear to my heart- printmaking by hand in the darkroom. It’s something I’m doing for some of my favorite wedding images as well as my own personal photography. Whether you do it yourself or have someone do it for you, don’t let your photos die an early death on your hard drive. 😇

[58] the bride and groom REALLY knew their audience, cat cutouts seemed to steal the show during this reception. 🐱

[57] I’m getting hooked more and more on the images that hold a sliver of the story but dive deep into the feeling.

[55] vulnerability is the number one super power for a photographer on the wedding day. Vulnerability to lay down your guard and open yourself up to a roomful of strangers, opting to love and accept both the people and the moment instead of steering into the comfort of our own egos. Showing up first with vulnerability lets others have the gift of going second, and simply reciprocating the warmth you already bring, and through that path we can come in close on the wedding day and photograph as a welcomed participant, not an outsider. Maybe even a friend.

[52] a small exploration of quiet moments juxtaposed with louder visual shouts. Leaving one side out only tells half a story on a wedding day.

[51] Love with intentionality. Where for a moment, or a series of moments, the world ends beyond the person in front of you.

As a wedding photographer, I try not to intrude on that space. Just observe it.

[50] reassuring squeezes, sweet encouragement, and an earnest prayer filled the space in this first touch on a snowy wedding day last December.

[49] I love a simplified table setting. It becomes more about textures and the balance of form and color rather than overwhelming “muchness” of luxury: multiple glasses, forks for undetermined usages, and napkins that seem to repel liquid.

It’s okay to let the table breathe, makes more room for dessert plates.
