Design and layout - ‘The Rings of Saturn’ by Rory Maley

Accompanying essay by @magkonluvitsa

Rory Maley is an educator and artist based in Melbourne. He has presented talks in Hamburg, Melbourne, and Sydney on topics ranging from mark-making and stormwater tunnels to Australian graffiti.
His research practice involves walking, cycling, and documenting the evolving materials and uses of public spaces such as parks and trails.

His current work explores the “inter-zone”: transitional areas between rural and urban, industrial and residential. These in-between spaces, often freight yards, garbage dumps, polluted wetlands, and overgrown fields serve as focal points for his ongoing investigations into the overlooked fringes of the city.

‘Built Environment’
Played at Built Environment music event
Video collage - Runtime 12 minutes

A collation of found footage of planned building demolitions played in reverse structures rise from collapse, defying finality. The work becomes a quiet act of resistance, reflecting on cycles of erasure and renewal in urban space. Created in dialogue as an ode to @___office advocacy to preserve and maintain Melbourne’s public housing, the piece cathartically reimagines destruction as a potential for preservation, rather than displacement. by @jhneumann
