POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED

"Half The World Away" as made famous by Oasis.

Getting back in the swing on the covers after taking my sweet time on this one. I don't love my performance on this one and I think I may try to a different way to mic the guitars in the future.

I'm now at the point of needing to do the work on learning mixing. I have my work flow, but how do I fine tune that. I also think I probably should have automated some volume levels on this. It's not bad but I have my sights set on something better sounding.

For now, back to learning and picking more songs and hopefully playing some sets soon.

52 Covers, 52 Weeks...

For more than a few years, I have had every intention to attempt to do 52 covers in a year, one for each week. This time, I have a new wrinkle. I want to build my playing, recording, mixing and mastering skills, so I am recording each of these at home and working within the limitations I have in my home studio.

I am not always going to get everything right or perfect, and accepting that is half the work of this project. It's just about doing it and getting the reps and we'll see where my skills get to by week 52.

For week one, I recorded a cover of a song that has crushed me every time I've heard it since it was released. Atom Bomb by @bullythemusic Alicia is the total package as writer, musician and engineer, someone I'm looking up to while attempting this project.

The guitars used on this are the two first guitars I ever had. A blue Jay Tursa Jr. acoustic (Blue Jay or just Blue for short), and my black Epiphone SG (Blackie). They've been in my life for over 20 years, and sound like it to an extent. But again this wasn't about perfection, it's about process and accomplishing something I set out to do years ago.

Thanks to @kyrasheridan for the cover art and the support in this crazy project. If you got this far in reading your probably involved in music in some way too, feel free to leave a comment or dm me any feedback or notes on the mix, and I'll try to improve for next weeks tune by @jhowecovers

#52weeks52covers Seein Stars - Turnstile. Got weird with this one. Turned it into a bossa nova. Built this mix out of loops. Don’t love my vocal takes but probably a product of rushing. Should start on these earlier in the week. Anyways! Good one to push myself on and get a bit more in the weeds on the mix. #cover #turnstile #coversong #mixengineer by @jhowecovers

Jawbreaker - Kiss The Bottle

#52Weeks52Covers A little late on posting this one after finishing it last Saturday. First time I tried mixing a live off the floor take. Two mics, Dynamic on the guitar and Condenser on the vocals.
I was a little sketched out about the the fact things were bleeding together. I am happy with how it turned out though I think. Another cover coming soon.

52 weeks, 52 covers: Dead Leaves and the Dirty Ground - The White Stripes

Week 2, it’s a raw one. I may have taken a bit too much influence from Jack White on this one. I got so caught on tone and getting one great guitar take, I forget to play to a click. That definitely threw me off when it came time to think about adding any percussion. I guess I could have quantized or played with Flex Time.

But the performance felt really good so I decided to just try to live with it. Definitely a learning curve to doing this all solo. Really happy with the mix, might be a bit loud but you can be the judge of that.

Looking forward to next weeks challenge.
