Students in our new Hand Papermaking course, taught by Professor @zchamera_art, wrapped up their Narratives and Visual Metaphors project!

Beginning with a handmade opaque base sheet created from cotton pulp, students incorporate found materials, photographs, and magazine cutouts into a collage. Using a lamination technique, they apply a translucent layer of paper made from flax and abaca pulp over the composition, embedding the collage elements directly into the final handmade paper piece.

Final works from the Embroidered Merit Badge project in Professor @sashbask Fiber Art and the String Revolution course! For this project, students learned the basics of embroidery and used those techniques to design and stitch their own merit badges. Each piece represents something each student has accomplished or is proud to share with the class.

A huge thank you to Erin M. Riley for her visit with the Program in Visual Arts last Tuesday!

@erinmriley gave a thoughtful artist talk where she discussed her hand-woven tapestries and art practice. Riley then joined Professor Baskinโ€™s Fiber Art course (with guests from Dr. Schoppโ€™s History of Art course) to give a tapestry demonstration including a color blending technique used in her practice.

This talk was supported by @jhuvisualarts, @jhuarts_innovation, The Department of the History of Art, and The Program for the Study of Women, Gender, and Sexuality.

Final works from the Collage Reimagined project in Professor @taeokstudio Collage & Assemblage: 2-D & 3-D Art Practices course.

For this project, students were invited to reinterpret a well-known collage by a contemporary artist, using the original work as a point of departure for their own creative exploration. Through this process of reimagining and transformation, they examined how collage can generate new meanings, perspectives, and visual narratives while engaging in a dialogue with art history.

We wanted to kick off the semester by highlighting works from our annual student exhibition last May, and to thank everyone who came to the reception to show their support for the hard work of our students. A big thank you to President Ronald J. Daniels for attending the exhibition and supporting what we do here in the Program in Visual Arts.

We hope you all have an enriching and successful semester!

We are incredibly excited about our recent acquisition of four floor looms and the wonderful write-up about our purchase on the Fiber Art Now blog! Please read our press release below and click on our links section to read the Fiber Art Now article. Please also enjoy the images in this post of recent fiber student and JHU graduate Iheoma Anaemeribe performing her piece โ€œThreading the Semesterโ€ on one of the new looms as part of our Annual Student Exhibition!

Thank you Cami Smith @fiberartnow for helping to share our story!

โ€”โ€”

Johns Hopkins Universityโ€™s Program in Visual Art is expanding its fiber curriculum with the acquisition of four new floor looms from Philadelphiaโ€™s Weaver House (@weaverhouseco). This acquisition expands on the programโ€™s single existing floor loom, which has become integral to Visual Arts courses such as Advanced Fibers, Looms and Computers, and Fiber Art and the String Revolution. Floor looms allow students to study weaving as a foundational digital technology and explore the relationship between woven patterning and computer programming.

Originally obtained from the University of Arts in Philadelphia upon the Universityโ€™s closing in 2024, Rachel Snack (artist and founder of local Philadelphia workshop โ€œWeaver Houseโ€) crowd-sourced to rescue 16 Maccomber rising-shed jack looms from heading to a landfill or being split up and lost from an educational environment. After years of serving the Philadelphia fiber community, Weaver House announced in October 2025 that it was closing. With the impending closure, Snack announced a desire to find the right steward and prioritize the educational goals of these historic looms. Johns Hopkins Universityโ€™s Program in Visual Arts proved to be the ideal home. JHU Visual Arts Lecturer, Sasha Baskin, with the support of departmental administrator Caitlin Curtis and Program Director Professor Margaret Murphy, negotiated the acquisition of the looms and safely moved them from Philadelphia to Baltimore, where they now reside.

We will spend the summer months performing minor maintenance on the looms to ensure they are fully prepared for our Fall course offerings! taken in Jhu-Mica Film Centre by @jhuvisualarts

congratulations to you six, we couldnโ€™t be more proud of the work you created and the dedication you have given to the arts during your time at Johns Hopkins University.

Award Descriptions:

The Eugeneย Leakeย Award
The Eugeneย Leakeย Awards are given to students each year who show outstanding achievement in the arts as minors in the Program in Visual Arts. Eugeneย Leake, the namesake of the award, was theย first Johns Hopkins University artist-in-residence. He founded the Homewood Arts Workshop in 1974 as an informal opportunity for Hopkins students, regardless of experience, to learn the fundamentals of drawing and painting.ย

The Prof. B Excellence in Photography Award
Presented to a graduating Art Minor in the Program in Visual Arts at Johns Hopkins University, this award highlights excellence, dedication, and growth through the medium of photography. Professor Phyllis Arbesman Berger, known as Prof. B to her students, founded the photography area at Johns Hopkins University in 1995, teaching all levels of the medium until her retirement in 2026. This award honors her commitment to teaching students the perfect balance of technical proficiency and storytelling. taken in Jhu-Mica Film Centre by @jhuvisualarts
