🎻✨ In Nova Atlantis, Miako Klein and Jia Lim create a sonic space where past and present flow into one another. Inspired by Francis Bacon’s New Atlantis (1626), the duo reimagines Baroque-era music through improvisation, transforming historical materials into fluid, contemporary sound worlds.
Harpsichord and Baroque violin become mutable sonic bodies, while electronics stretch, fracture, and reshape familiar timbres. The result is neither historical reconstruction nor modern reinterpretation, but something in between—a space of possibility where time slows down, and new forms emerge.
Released as an album in 2026, Nova Atlantis invites us to listen across centuries and imagine history as something alive, evolving, and open-ended.

“Throughout my entire life I’ve had to prove that I am, above all, a composer, and one who is as serious and as smart as any of my male colleagues. My music has been very successful, and I think it’s despite the fact that I’m a woman, while my colleagues have thought it’s clearly because I’m a woman!

I’ve said to myself, “Fine, I’m a woman and I accept the fact that people say I’m a compositrice.” But of course, this term doesn’t work as eloquently in other languages as it does in French. In English, you’d have to say “woman composer,” but you’d never say “man composer.” So I don’t consider myself a compositrice. It’s more of a silly quip that makes people think. As for my material emerging from my experience as a woman, that’s just a point of departure. Once I begin composing, I transform it into pitch and rhythm.

So whatever that experience is, it simply becomes an element of my work and not a personal story—that’s all that matters. The material can come from our own lives, the lives around us, or wherever. But at some point, it simply becomes music.” – Kaija Saariaho

“I could not help thinking, as l looked at the Works of Shakespeare on my shelf, that [...] it would have been impossible, completely and entirely, for any woman to have written the plays of Shakespeare in the age of Shakespeare. Let me imagine, since facts are so hard to come by, what would have happened had Shakespeare had a wonderfully gifted sister, called Judith, let us say …

Judith was as adventurous, as imaginative, as agog to see the world as he was. But she was not sent to school. She had no chance of learning grammar or reading Horace and Virgil. She picked up a book now and then, one of her brother’s perhaps, and read a few pages. But then her parents came in, and told her to mend the stockings.” – Virginia Woolf

Seid dabei!

🕰️ ab 19:30 Uhr (9.5.) / ab 18 Uhr (10.5.)

Today, 400 years ago, Francis Bacon passed away.
In 1626, he wrote Nova Atlantis — a visionary text that continues to inspire us and our album.

“We have also sound-houses, where we practice and demonstrate all sounds and their generation…”
A place of imagined acoustics, unheard harmonies, artificial echoes, and transformed voices — a laboratory of sound.

We just set up our own sound house.
Curious what it sounds like?
