Join them for an interactive live conversation exploring culture, identity, representation, media, music, and the impact of seeing our communities reflected on one of the world’s biggest stages.

La Mesa is a community-centered conversation series bringing people together through dialogue and cultural exchange.

✨ Due to strong interest, a small number of additional tickets have been released.

Each ticket holder will also be entered into community raffles throughout the evening and receive small “detalles de La Mesa” as a thank you for being part of the experience. 🌱

Okay, okay, not everyyy Latinx/a/e/o artist is “hopping on” Afrobeats BUT, there’s quite a few now.
• Dominican Spanish was “too grimey”, “too ghetto”, “too this”, “too that” for SO long; ahora hay varias personas que quieren usar la jerga y el palabreo Dominicano 🇩🇴 in their songs, and more widely in the entertainment industry - in their movies (even hiring non-Dominican actors to speak Dominican Spanish and the slang doesn’t come out the same. IFKYK WTF I’m talking abouttt !)

&& believe me; I’m all for exploring creative outlets and processes but if y’all can’t respect it and didn’t appreciate it from the BEGINNING, back the f up, is my not so humble take. 🤷🏽‍♀️
Otherwise?
The truth is: you hopping on it because it’s a “trend”, when there are people out here doing the real work & being ethical about the music being created without even thinking about it as “ethics in music”.
Like my guy @loochbodega - what does that mean?
That knowledge ain’t free & it comes with a fee 🤷🏽‍♀️

This video is so much more than what I said here. It’s about
• cultural gatekeeping
• language, and ultimately, ethnic + racial elitism
• the policing of diaspora identities
• trend hypocrisy just to catch some views/likes

& to those who know how to honour and show appreciation to la cultura AS A WHOLE - not only Dominican, and also Caribbean, and communities within our communities that are of African roots, heritage and origins - we love and appreciate y’all. Just know the difference between appreciating vs. appropriating.

LASTLY - when I say he “brought it here”, I’m sayin’ he was the first Caribbean/Latin artist (to my knowledge!) to bring DR’s culture (Spanish and DR slang included) AND honour Afrobeats’ roots by taking an approach many have a hard time understanding is NECESSARY, like collaborating with African artist/producers/models/creatives.
