… with thanks to Lisa Mezzacappa at the Jazzschool, I am presenting a project I initiated during the pandemic which is only now seeing the evening light in public performance.

Canción Tagalog explores real and imagined musical connections between the Philippines and Cuba, given the islands’ shared Spanish colonial history. What if Cuban musicians from the early 20th century heard the kundiman, harana, and danzas that came from the Philippines of the late 19th century? What if Filipino musicians danced to the Cuban orquestas, charangas, and conjuntos?

Joining my group that evening is my former student, ethnomusicologist Noah Rosen, who will cohost the presentation, lecture, and performance with me and the band to celebrate the intersecting timelines of Hispanic Heritage Month and Filipino American History Month.

Light refreshments including lumpia, pancit, turon, and Calamansi juice will be served! (It’s also my birthday, so there might be 🎂)

Excited for this Saturday’s work-in progress showing of “The Big Whoop Dee Do” @somarts and presented with @apicc_sf @kulartspresents It’s a pleasure to collaborate again with direk @when.do.we.eat and witness first hand + behind the scenes the magic of storytelling with puppetry. As someone who grew up with The Muppets and Sesame Street as regular fixtures on the tube, I’m having so much fun composing music to go with all the visual magic 💫

This time I have the honor to work with a super swift and funky modular marching-ska-swing super band made up of @mtdjazzmusic @kristinesinajon @b.sptla @monzzzzz ! So happy they all agreed to be a part of this silliness (and spread sheets and group texts and drop box folders etc. etc. lol).

Heres some behind the shoulder footage of us rehearsing and peeping/practicing with what the puppeteers have been diligently working with. A lot of love goes into this work!

Don’t miss out this Saturday! And if you have to, be on the lookout for the full production in January. Ticket links are in bios or feel free to DM me/ check out my stories in the days leading up 🌞

Ur fave ritual kapatids are at it again (idk if we’re actually your favorite, but I’m just gonna claim this!)

@mxpeeks @jicban and I seeded this a little over a year now and have been doing archival research since then, but have finally gotten funding through the @kr_foundation to support our research, development, and presentation. While the archives share tidbits of the front-facing aspects of this snippet of time, it doesn’t get to the personal, emotional, survival, and healing stories of our community during this significant, yet under-told part of our history. We were finally able to meet Jaime Geaga, founder of FTFA, and we’re excited to deepen and learn through this process. Huge shout outs to @kearnystreetworkshop for their support during all of our applications.

Excited to share more w yall over the next year! by @jicban

been trying to upkeep consistent music doodle time for myself and ritualize how to get into a uncluttered mind space. sometimes the somatic signal is the second cup of coffee at 10:30/just looking out the window and listening for a bit. prioritizing time to be free and make something without judgement for 10-15 minutes. also exploring how to keep my relationship to my art practice romantic..and evolving.

when my back and shoulders feel heavy I know I’ve been lacking that free creative time to cultivate my inner thoughts, which I know unfortunately is a luxury for many of us. Are there ways y’all ritualize your creative time?

Hello!
I’m excited to announce my next project: Mémoire. 🍾🎈🎊🎉
This is a one woman show for aerial cello. It’s deeply personal and it’s about my life. It’s also the first time I’ve ever sung on any of my projects!!!!!! As always, it’s weird AF! Beautifully weird.
I got to record the album portion of it over the past couple days with @ssspacemoth in the captain’s chair tracking and mixing. And my good friend @jicban is featured heavily as a collaborator on the album. We worked hard on an arrangement of “Bang, Bang, My Baby Shot Me” featuring my vocals and cello and well Josh’s genius touch.

I’ll be debuting the stage show in Las Vegas in February! And I’m hoping to do a GRANMY run under the Classical Compendium category for the album! @grammys
Stay tuned!

HINGA means 'breathe' in Filipino. A reminder that is ever present in this paradigm-shifting time. A prayer that was seeded at the height of the COVID-19 pandemic — amidst unrelenting collective loss and transfiguration. In October 2020, a small but mighty cast and crew came together for this ceremony of grief, healing, and transmutation captured on film with the prayerful poetry of @amiihan, the brilliant eye of @katcole.works, the soul stirring sounds of @jicban, and riveting performances by @toonworld1990, @earlando_engkanto, @all.in.tv.sf, and @lisatitalisa.

Every time I watch even a snippet of this, I am reminded of the powerful medicine that stirred. The ancestors who guided every movement, every word, and every action. Still beckoning us forward to reconnect with the most desolate parts of ourselves.

I am elated to share that HINGA will be on view through Lineages of Organizing: The Asian Pacific Islander Cultural Center at 30, the centerpiece exhibit of the 2026 United States of Asian America Festival: Common Ground. The exhibit will be up from Thursday, April 23 to Sunday, May 24 at the SOMArts Cultural Center Main Gallery. Agyamanak unay @sco.lin and @apicc_sf for breathing more life into this offering.

Check out apiculturalcenter.org to learn more about the exhibit, the festival, and all of the incredible artists involved.
