Woohooo! I shared A RIVER OF DUST with a LOT of kids last Friday!!! The San Francisco Public Library has posted the livestream of both the K-2 and 3-5th grade Kidquake presentations on YouTube! The K-2 was streamed with a live audience (but the audio only captures the speakers), and the 3-5th was recorded online via Zoom because the library closed the day of Diane Feinstein's funeral (which was just across the plaza at City Hall). Cheers to the awesome presenters I shared the stage with last Friday, @meera.sriram (A GARDEN IN MY HANDS) and @seinawedlick (NAMING CEREMONY)!!! Can you believe all three of us became engineers, and now we write books for kids?! Each of us had only 10 minutes to speak, so it was a race to pack in as much as we could, LOL. Please share with teachers and librarians who may want to play either the K-2 or 3-5 recordings for their classes! The story begins…

We've been swept away by each spread exploring different ocean zones and are amazed to learn how these fascinating creatures survive. The book includes extensive back matter with information about the food web, the role of zooplankton to ocean life, and ecological threats. This is nonfiction at its finest and will help people understand and care about these amazing creatures which are the heart of the ocean. We love this gorgeous book!

Harrowing and personal. Honest and heartbreaking. Candace Fleming's meticulously-researched reconstruction of her father's WWII service in Alaska's Aleutian Islands doesn't shy away from the realities of war. And it doesn't shy away from suggesting why the American public's focus was kept elsewhere, or why these events are not in U.S. History books. (At least they weren't in mine!) The theme could be "mistakes were made," (on two separate islands) but at least, AT LEAST!, those in command learned from them, and used those learnings to help make D-Day a success.

My own father was in Europe for D-Day. And I'd like to thank Charlie Groth (Fleming's father) posthumously for his service, for doing what needed to be done, despite the odds against him and his peers. So many of his combat buddies were buried on a lonely, weather-beaten island in the Aleutians.

As a child, when Candace asked her father if he'd ever killed someone, he'd said, "There are some stories a father doesn't tell his daughter." Fleming was only 14 when he died of cancer, so those stories went to the grave with him. But this didn't stop Fleming from piecing together his story through her exhaustive research, including the words taken from a journal kept by a Japanese doctor (who had initially trained in the U.S. and who refused to take another human's life) assigned to the Aleutian outpost for the Japanese army. His words serve to humanize "the enemy" and present his moral struggle as a doctor and religious person who believed in the sanctity of life.

But Fleming shows how all lives, including those of the "victors," are marred forever by the tragedy of war.

This book should be a MUST READ, not just for middle or high schoolers, but for everyone. These forgotten young men deserve the attention (and gratitude) of a nation, and they deserve their own space in the history books. And perhaps (I HOPE) it will also add to the greater understanding that war is to be avoided, not glorified.

My nephew, Rich, has ridden in Iowa's #RAGBRAI for years. But today, at his stop in Elk Horn, IA, a #librarian asked him to name his favorite book. When he said "My aunt's!" they asked about my books (HEARTLAND, THE OCEAN'S HEART, A RIVER OF DUST) and website.

Bonus points: HEARTLAND takes place in Iowa. How perfect is that?!!!! Woohooo!!!

THANK YOU, RICH!!! Maybe I should have given you a trailer full of books to hand out on your trip!!! But that would have slowed you down, LOL.

For those who don't know, RAGBRAI, the [Des Moines] Register’s Annual Great Bicycle Ride Across Iowa, is the largest cycling tour in the world. The recreational ride traverses Iowa west to east from the state line at the Missouri river to the border at the Mississippi River. Hundreds of thousands have ridden RAGBRAI since its start in 1973.

This year's route is 391.4 miles with a 16,027ft climb over 8 days.

Today's THE DAY you get to meet Xyla, Cassie, Ryder, Lupine, Alegría, Mr. Lanski, Rory, Twiggy, Gofer, Carl the Nose, Cash, and a couple of bullies whose names shall remain buried within those pages. Plus, the voices of Weather, Time, and The Farm! And a cameo from Earl "Rusty" Butz!

Seven years of my life wrapped up in a sweet dust jacket overlaid with James Firnhaber's exceptional art!!!

Thank you to the team at LBYR and my agent, Lori Steel. Without you all, this story would just be a bunch of molecules in a high entropy state (like the pieces of a Death Star Lego model) zinging about the universe. I hope you all enjoy the story! XOXOXO❤️
