Thick thighs save lives - that’s my story, and I’m sticking to it. Leg strength improves metabolic health, reduces fall risk, slows brain aging, and lowers your risk of all-cause mortality. But remember that strength is measurable, but NOT BY APPEARANCE. Lift some freaking weights, yo.

As a female #personaltrainer over 50 who mostly works with my own demographic, the negative body comments make me so freaking sad. Change has to start with ourselves. Words matter, y’all. Your mind and your nervous system perpetuate what you feed it. Be kind.

As a post-menopausal woman who can’t take HRT due to breast cancer history and whose immunotherapy also exacerbates joint pain, I had almost accepted that my knees were just always going to be cranky. But I’m nothing if not stubborn, so I kept investigating and decided to put these three exercises into my daily routine. Were they a magic instantaneous fix? Of course not. Nothing is. But after about three months of doing these moves consistently, my knees feel tremendously better and stronger and allow me to do all the things I want to do. Joints need to be able to move in all the ways they were designed to and then strengthened in those ranges. Knees flex, extend, and rotate. Any of my clients who struggle with knee issues get these in their program because we can’t do the heavy lower body lifts with cranky knees. Quit wasting money on useless supplements and give your joints some appropriate input to make them respond. Let me know your questions! ⬇️ by @jillbartine

Because I post a lot about strength training these days, I often get asked if I still do yoga. The short answer is yes, and I absolutely do still love teaching my yoga classes. But when you have limited time, especially if you’re a woman over 30 whose bone density is only going to go in one direction if you don’t actively do something about it, your main focus has got to be on lifting weights. It’s the number one non-negotiable if you want to age well. Yoga for me now is a complement to my training and a way to soothe my nervous system. This was my five-minute stretch routine after my upper body lift today. Let me know if you try it!

So glad to be home for this one, for multiple reasons. Keeping my expectations realistic, so I’m just happy we got that sack on that sack. #govols #therealUT #GBO #VFL by @jillbartine

Don’t do it, girl. Don’t fall for that skinny culture BS. Lift the weights. Once you commit to it long enough to see what you’re capable of, it’s no exaggeration to say that it’s life changing. I love teaching this to women especially, so reach out if you think you’re ready to go for it. I got you! 💪

Actually, we probably don’t need to talk about it because this video makes it pretty clear. 😂 Is this something I do in every set of every exercise? Absolutely not. This was my third set of these on week six, and I’m switching to strict press next week, so I decided to let it rip. If you want to make progress in the gym, you gotta let things look ugly towards the end of a set sometimes: stank face, grunting, janky form, and that weaker side fighting for dear life. SO glad to be done with these for now because they SUCK. But am I bulky yet? 😉

Some thoughts on why I teach the way I teach now. Back in my early teaching days, my favorite compliments from students were more like, man, that was your hardest class yet or my abs were dying. These days, I’m offering something different as a yoga teacher. How does your nervous system feel after class? Are you breathing a little better? If you want more of a physical push, I’ve got a few openings for training. 😉

Thank you so much to everyone who wished me a happy birthday! I so enjoyed reading all your messages. Somehow I magically ended up with a pretty light work day yesterday, so I had some extra free time beyond teaching yoga and flute and working out. I missed seeing The Milk Carton Kids last time they were here on my birthday because of rehearsal, so it was extra special to get to see them this year and I thank them for choosing such a perfect date! 😂 (They’re INCREDIBLE, by the way.) How often do you consider the kinetic chain when addressing an achy or tight-feeling body part? If you’re constantly bemoaning having “tight hamstrings” but haven’t considered your feet and calves as part of the picture, you might be missing an important piece of the puzzle. Body parts are not islands unto themselves, and we have to often look through the chain to discover where something might be originating. Or if that’s too much information for ya, this is just a nice lower body stretch sequence that I’ve been enjoying. Try it and let me know what you think. Take your time with the first one especially and don’t push too hard if your body isn’t ready. These things take time.
