It was so nice to read this article! Mayen Beckmann offers very good insight into living with Max Beckmann's paintings. The two pieces seen in the background of this picture were painted in 1950, after Beckmann's trip to California. "The Mill in Eucalyptus Forest (Mills College)" (1950) that appears on the left, is a reference to the building at Pond Farm in Guerneville, CA and the eucalyptus trees that populate the landscape there. Pond Farm was a celebrated ceramics colony that was founded and run by Marguerite Wildenhain (née Friedländer) in 1949. Wildenhain had been a member of the Bauhaus since 1919 and had designed porcelain dish-wares in Berlin. "West Park" seen on the right is a representation of the campus at Mills College in Oakland, CA. I have posted a recent video about Marguerite Wildenhain below. According to Wildenhain's diagram of ceramic vessels that appears in the video, Beckmann painted vessel #14 for "Large Still-Life with Doves" (1950) and placed it on the mantlepiece above the fireplace.
