10 things I do to survive my long days in the field as a professional archaeologist:1. Bring actual ice in a cooler but keep it in the bag to keep drinks cold and to eat when I overheat2. Put bandages on my heels BEFORE I put my boots on even if they're broken in already3. Bring an extra bandana to switch mine out halfway through the day4. Soak my bandana in ice water before I put it on (store the second one - A CLEAN ONE - in the cooler to soak for the second half of the day)5. Bring myself a sweet treat to enjoy on the drive back home/hotel so I have something to look forward to6. Carry four pencils for when I inevitably lose three of them to my coworkers and the desert5. Reapply sunscreen every two hours at least - EVEN IF YOU'RE TAN (skin cancer is not a joke)6. Bring carrots or cucumbers as part of your lunch or snack (they cool you down better than you think)7. Bring a solar-powered fan that doubles as a flashlight and phone charger (Comment LINK for the one I've used for six years)8. Second pair of socks for when you eventually sweat through yours by 10am (you don't want the blisters from wearing damp socks)9. Comfortable waterproof boots to wear on every project (Comment BOOTS for my favorite steel toes that I hike in)10.
