☠️NONE SHALL SLEEP Series by @elliemarney ☠️
This was such a highly bingeable thriller/horror series that will keep you on the edge of your seat! This is truly my comfort series!! Every time I get stressed out at school, it’s time for a reread! (I just finished reread number 3 tehe). I love the “Silence of The Lambs” type concept with a girl who survived a SK being the one to interview teenage SK’s!! The plots in each book were all so twisty and engaging, and it is definitely one that will keep you up at night! This is perfect for fans of “Criminal Minds” or Jennifer Lynn Barnes’ “The Naturals” series (although this series leans more horror than JLB’s).

Also I love when my mystery books have a romance subplot, and this one is SO GOOD! I love the slow burn friends to lovers arc of Emma and Travis as they both work through their traumas and learn to find someone they can finally trust and let go with. UGH MY BABIES!!! I LOVE THEM SO MUCH!

The way I loved Milo and Prue should be studied by science. Prue is such a DEEPLY relatable character, she was truly made FOR ME. I loved seeing the soft girl who feels so deeply get to experience love and be loved so unconditionally. Prue is someone who is always taking care of everyone else and to see her be taken care of definitely healed something inside of me. Don’t even get me started on Milo Kablukov, the most down bad man to ever do it. I love this man, he has so much depth to him! I, famously, love a sad, sl^tty man with daddy issues and that is definitely Milo. I just want to give him the biggest hug. Milo and Prue’s chemistry was so electric from the very beginning and I loved seeing them both try to deny feelings for one another when WE ALL KNOW THE TRUTH!!! Their story was deeply heartfelt and tender while balancing it with moments of HOT SPICE and comedy that made this such an amazing book. Hannah Bonam Young never fails!!!

THE VELVET KN’FE by @maureenjohnsonbooks
I really loved how this was quite different from the last two books in terms of the murder conventions and timeline! It felt like this approach really paired well with the personal growth of the characters as their priorities in both relationships, friendships, and their futures shift. It was such a shocking end/reveal that I did not see coming! I had such a grotesque fascination with the cult element, because I was so disgusted by the behavior of the leader but also so interested by the psychology of how someone worms their way into that type of control over someone else. Maureen Johnson truly knows how to balance two timelines and keep you on the edge of your seat for both! I’m so glad that this story isn’t over, and that we will have one more book in the Truly Devious universe. I’m not ready for this series to be over, but at the same time, I need book seven immediately. I cannot wait to see how Stevie’s character arc finishes.

In celebration of book 6 of the TRULY DEVIOUS series publishing on Tuesday, here are my edits for books 4 and 5 from my third reread of the entire series!!

It’s very rare to see further books in a series/spinoff series that are as good as the original, but these definitely hold up in quality to the original trilogy. I am excited to see what setting Johnson explores next, but whatever it ends up being, I know it will be great.

“Truly devious” series is back and better than ever with THE BOX IN THE WOODS! I found it so interesting that now that Stevie has solved the Ellingham crime of the century, she is now in demand to solve other crimes. In this book, a camp director offers Stevie a paid counselor role to come and bring her friends to help her solve the “Box in the Woods” murders of 1978 at the camp where they occurred. This book brings a new summer camp slasher vibe to the series and I thoroughly enjoyed every minute of it. This book was truly so addicting and thrilling, matching if not exceeding the shocking plot twists of the first three books. When I tell you that I never in a million years would have guessed this, I am not kidding. This book seriously defied every expectation that I had for it, and I am so thrilled to see what new adventures Stevie is going on in the next books. Again, Stevie is such a complex and lovable character. We see straight into her thought process and experience everything with her, including a close up on her mental health struggles. These mental health struggles (anxiety and panic attacks) are presented in such an honest way! Additionally, it should be noted that Maureen Johnson DELIVERS on the representation! Such good LGBTQIA+ rep!! Again, Maureen Johnson does not disappoint.

TRULY DEVIOUS is a thrilling boarding school m*rder mystery about a school that is famous for a m*rder that happened in the 1930s. I really enjoyed this book! It was so atmospheric, bringing you to the world of Ellingham Academy, a world of lies, secrets, betrayal, and murder, told in a dual perspective set between the present day and 1936. This is my fourth reread of the series in preparation for the final book releasing later this month!

The protagonist, Stevie, is such a complex, yet relatable character, who, as the book goes along, I really feel that I am getting to know. The author holds nothing back, allowing the reader to get a front-row seat to exactly how Stevie processes the world through her hyper fixated focus on mystery. That is really what makes these books so special for me. We see this complex, fascinating, ambitious female character, yet she is also completely human and flawed. We get to see her struggle with her mental health and her battle to stay alive in a school full of secrets and mysteries. I love how accurately and candidly Johnson portrayed Stevie’s mental health. Stevie is such an interesting character because while she is so knowledgeable and experienced with all things true crime, she is so inexperienced in many interpersonal relationships. I loved getting to see her fumble her way into these new friendships and relationships. I always love my mysteries with a touch of romance, and we definitely see that beginning to happen here!

This first book introduced the perfect amount of threads and mysteries for the rest of the series, leaving me guessing at every turn. This series is focused more on twists and turns rather than horror. I think this is a fantastic YA mystery series and I cannot wait to read the final book when it comes out later this month!

✨MARRIED WITH BENEFITS by @elliepalmerwrites ✨ Ellie Palmer weaves together yearning, humor, banter, and heartbreakingly accurate chronic pain/chronic illness representation in this delicious marriage of convenience romance! Palmer continues to outdo herself! This is my new favorite book of hers! This book had me truly laughing out loud, crying, and giggling and kicking my feet.

Lainey and Elliot are an absolute delight! Their chemistry was palpable from the very beginning! I adored the flirting to rivals to accomplices to friends to more than friends! (That was a mouthful!) The yearning and tension between these two was off the charts!!! I really enjoyed getting to see these to break down their barriers and get to know each others’ idiosyncrasies and quirks and fall head over heels in spite of themselves. I love the optimist and pessimist pairing, where the optimist makes the pessimist hope for the first time! Lainey has so much love to give with her full (but bruised) heart, and I was so happy to see her share it. Elliot is such a sweet nerdy man!!! He pays attention to every little detail, really listens, and is such a caretaker. They are both so special to me and I will protect them with my life!

I know I’ve already said it, but this book is actually so funny! ! love the banter between Lainey and Elliot and all of the zany situations they find themselves in within Timber Creek. Also, I love the fun chapter titles!!! Bring back chapter titles!!

Ellie Palmer balanced the deeper topics with such humor and levity without taking away from their importance. I can tell how much research, love, and care went into depicting Lainey’s chronic migraines and I really appreciated it. I found myself called out by/deeply relating to Lainey.

I always recommend Ellie Palmer’s books, but I ESPECIALLY recommend this one. This is one of my top reads of the year, hands down! Make sure to grab your copy when it comes out July 21!

✨YOU WON’T FORGET ME by @mazeyeddings ✨
For fans of Daisy Jones and the Six, this a sapphic childhood friends to lovers story surrounding the meteoric and unexpected rise of a new band! This is such a deeply emotional, heartwarming, and poignant look at artists and their relationship to the media, love, depression, and creative burnout. You can feel how much love and care Mazey Eddings has put into telling this story! The way that Eddings tackled compulsory heteronormativity and how it can manifest in both restrictive as well as accepting households was so interesting!

Both Cubby and Darcy are so complex and well thought out! I adore these messy, complicated humans and their love for one another. I am a sucker for childhood friends to lovers, and this one hit the spot! You can feel the yearning from both Cubby and Darcy from the very beginning!

I really loved the band and this new found family that these characters created! I found myself wanting to read more about each of the other characters and their journeys.

Overall, I definitely recommend this one!!

✨RETURN TO SENDER by @etnerapwrites ✨
This is exactly the queer joy filled book I needed to read right now!!! This is like YOU WITH A VIEW by Jessica Joyce but if everyone was queer. Stephanie Parente is going to be the next big thing, and I’m calling it right now!! If you want a book to make you both sob (in a healing, cathartic way) and giggle/kick your feet, this is the one for you!!

Violet and Dex have my whole heart. Violet is such a relatable and interesting character, as she navigates who she is now that the rug has been pulled out from under her. I felt her emotions so deeply and I know she will resonate with so many people. She is wonderfully flawed and effortlessly lovable.

DEX THE MAN THAT YOU ARE!! A 6’1” bi man who runs a charity to help queer youth?? He is the IDEAL MAN! He reminds me a lot of Augustus Everett from Beach Read. He is a sad man who has a hard time opening up but excels in yearning. I adore Dex, and I want to protect both him and Violet with my entire being.

Vi and Dex’s chemistry was electric from the very first interaction! I love a forced proximity romance and getting to see that tension bubble up until neither one can control it any more. This slow burn is definitely worth the payoff! These two are meant to be together in every lifetime.

Parente presents such a lovable cast of characters that I couldn’t get enough of. Phoebe was such a delightful little menace (complimentary) and I loved seeing her and Violet’s relationship evolve as they both started to heal. I need more books about Dex’s friend group!!

This book was such a heartfelt exploration of grief and finding ways to look forward to tomorrow. Parente handled all of these heavier topics with such love, care and nuance. I felt like I was healing the more that I read it!

HIGHLY RECOMMEND THIS ONE!!!

✨JUST A HIGHLAND FLING✨ by @nkumarwrites
This was the perfect blend of charming and sexy! This is perfect for people who love romcoms, road trips, and the Scottish Highlands! I really love Neelu and Jacob! They had such instant chemistry from the first time they met.

I really enjoyed Neelu’s character arc and getting to see her work through her hangups around love and her relationship with her father!. Everything about her character was so well crafted and made so much sense. I think so many people will also love her and relate to her. Neelu, you are so loved.

I also really love Jacob!!! A shy buttoned up Scottish poetry professor who wears a kilt? SAY LESS. Jacob is such a tender and vulnerable character and I adore him for that. We love a man who goes to therapy!! These two truly brought out the best in one another.

Overall, I highly recommend this one!!

✨GOOD SPIRITS by @authorbkborison ✨
I LOVE THIS BOOK!! B K Borison really brought back YEARNING! I adore the concept of the Department of Hauntings and Spirits! I need more magical realism romances from BK!!!

Harriet caught me so off guard by how intensely and immediately I related to her. She is such a rich and vibrant character and I loved getting to see her be loved loudly. Her character development was a joy to experience. Harriet York, you are so loved.

Don’t even get me started on Nolan Callaghan, professor of yearnology. I loved how jaded and complex his character was, and I loved getting to see Harriet bring him to life (in more ways than one). Truly, their chemistry is palpable from their very first interaction and only grows hotter after that. I love getting to see too lonely, broken people find each other. BK exceeded all of my expectations!!! GO READ THIS BOOK! (I know it’s April, but we all need the holiday joy, and that’s coming from me, a notorious grinch)
