Now on view: ‘Jill Nathanson: Chromatic Phrases’

The Museum's first exhibition dedicated entirely to abstract art in 14 years.

This display of recent works by color field artist Jill Nathanson demonstrates one of the most fundamental aspects of all art: the use of color. As you spend time with each piece, consider setting aside the expectation that an artwork needs to tell a specific story. Nathanson is less interested in narratives than in how the interaction of color shapes our experience.

Color can evoke moods, memories, and sensations before we consciously analyze them. Abstract painting invites us to experience art in one of its purest forms. Rather than asking, "What is it?" or "What is the artist saying?" try asking, "What does it do?"

Experience this original exhibition at the Vero Beach Museum of Art through February 7, 2027.

MUSEUM ACQUISITION
Jill Nathanson (b. 1955)
“Contrapuntal,” 2025
Acrylic and polymers with oil on panel
30 1/2 x 55 1/2 inches (77.5 x 141 cm)
Collection of Syracuse University Art Museum

“These works allow us to forge critical interdisciplinary connections across our many audiences that range from the Syracuse University campus to the Central New York region. From materials science and engineering to questions of identity and social justice, these acquisitions create opportunities for conversations that extend far beyond the gallery walls.

Jill Nathanson’s abstract painting further strengthens the potential for interdisciplinary conversation at the museum regarding materiality and painting techniques. This luminous painting that explores the interaction of colors is created by pouring and manipulating acrylic that has been mixed with polymers. Nathanson also employs theatrical lighting gels to plan the composition.” - Melissa Yuen, Curator
