"Breath Circle #9 (Lotus Blossom) 'nam myoho renge kyo'"
2025
Pastel on Bhutan Mitsumata paper died with tea.
62 x 60.5 inches

While reading the Lotus Sutra I discovered the chant "Nam myoho renge kyo", which is Devotion to the Mystic Dharma of the Lotus Flower Sutra. While chanting I experienced my whole body as breath. I created this drawing while chanting. It took me most of last summer to make, then it was exhibited at Pie Projects, Santa Fe in May, 2026.

"Breathing into the Moon for Enheduanna #23".
Watercolor, gouache, graphite on Bhutan Mitsumata paper, 10.5 x 10.5 inches.

Born in 2286 BC, Enheduanna was the entu priestess of the moon god Nanna in the Sumerian city-state of Ur. Sargon of Akkad, her father, the king of Akkad appointed Enheduanna to the position of priestess in Ur to consolidate power. Enheduanna is the first recorded author to sign her name to a text "Exaltation of Inanna", which relays her own tragic fate. She recounts how she was cast out of her temple, stripped of her priestly offices, and driven into the wilderness by a rebel named Lugal-ane. She cries out to the moon god Nanna for help, but upon receiving no answer, she directs her prayers directly to her personal god, Nanna's sister, Inanna, the Sumerian goddess of war, sex, paradox and transformation. Inanna complies. Lugal-ane is defeated. Enheduanna is restored to her position as priestess in Ur.

We are delighted to congratulate Jill O’Bryan (@jillobryan) as the 2026 recipient of the Barry Lopez Foundation Visual Artist Fellowship (@barry_lopez_foundation).

Founded around Barry Lopez’s enduring question, “What is our response as a community of artists to the fate of the earth?”, the fellowship supports artists, composers, and writers whose work moves beyond documenting a threatened and changing planet to illuminate moments of beauty, inspiration, and connection to the land.

With support from the Barry Lopez Foundation for Art & Environment, O’Bryan will create two monumental desert frottages of Chupinas Mesa in northern New Mexico. Working directly with the landscape, she uses graphite to create rubbings of the earth beneath her paper, transforming geological time, erosion, and place into immersive drawings.

“Recording my interactions with the dirt and rock, sifting through the desert rubble, which is alive with activity, I lie down and let the rock hold me. Then I draw this holding, which I experience as a resonance. I am not just scratching on the surface, so to speak, the drawings retrieve the land’s depth by revealing crevasses formed by wind and rain over millennia.”

The Barry Lopez Foundation for Art & Environment launched three new programs this spring to mark our fifth anniversary. Today, we are celebrating Jill O’Bryan, who has been awarded our 2026 Visual Artist Fellowship to support the creation of two monumental “frottage” drawings of the northern New Mexico landscape:

“Recording my interactions with the dirt and rock, sifting through the desert rubble, which is alive with activity, I lie down and let the rock hold me. Then I draw this holding, which I experience as a resonance. I am not just scratching on the surface, so to speak, the drawings retrieve the land’s depth by revealing crevasses formed by wind and rain over millennia.”

When the foundation was established, Barry posed the question, “What is our response as a community of artists to the fate of the earth?” We are committed to supporting artists and writers whose work moves beyond documenting a threatened and ravaged planet to point us toward moments that reaffirm the beauty and inspiration to be found in the landscape. Collectively, their work will create a record of engagement with the planet and our response to this moment.

"Breathing into the Moon" (2023)
Each: 10.5 x 10.5 inches
Watercolor, acrylic, graphite, mixed media on Bhutan Mitsumata paper

Was thinking of the feminine in the moon and Enheduanna, Sumerian priestess of the Moon God Nanna, and poet (c. 2300 BC) in the Sumerian city of Ur. In Enheduanna's text "Exaltation of Innana" she declared herself: "I, Enheduanna..." and become the first named author in world literature.

A beautiful exhibition of work about Enheduanna was at the Morgan Library in 2023: "She Who Wrote: Enheduanna and Women of Mesopotamia, ca. 3400–2000 B.C."
