Rising costs are not always controllable.

The amount of inventory committed against those costs is.

Retailers with strong visibility into margins, inventory levels, and future commitments respond deliberately. The ones without it are left reacting once profitability has already taken the hit. by @jilloralevich

Inventory Isn’t Cash Until It Sells

Inventory is one of the largest investments a retailer makes.

Having merchandise on the floor does not create value on its own.
Inventory has to sell, generate margin, and ultimately convert back into cash.

That is why inventory productivity matters.

EDITS Retail Consulting partners with specialty and independent retailers to bring structure and strategy to the decisions that matter most - what to buy, how much to buy, and when to buy it.
The result: Clearer decisions, healthier inventory, improved cash flow, and stronger margins.

A retail Client had a cash flow problem that had been building for three seasons.
The owner believed the issue was sales revenue. It wasn’t.

They did not need more inventory.
It needed to make the inventory work harder through:
Structured markdowns.
Open-to-buy at the class level.
Receipt plans reduced in underperforming categories and redirected toward stronger areas of the business.
Consistent weekly review: sell-through by class, inventory age, and remaining OTB.

The revenue problem was an inventory problem. by @jilloralevich

Across retail categories, consistent growth comes down to discipline. Making informed decisions, following through, and quickly turning insights into action.
The strongest retailers use experience, instinct, and data.

Without structure, visibility is inconsistent.
With it, retailers are better positioned to make decisions earlier, protect inventory productivity, and adapt without losing control of the business.

Discipline is the biggest difference between maintaining the business and building sustained growth. by @jilloralevich

Most inventory issues don’t start on the floor; they start at the buy.

Overbuying, missed reorders, excess stock - it’s what happens without structure.

When buying aligns with sales patterns, everything improves: turns, margins, cash flow.
