This one has been on my mind since I finished it. Hard to let it leave my finger.The stone had been sitting in my box for a while — waiting, the way the best ones do, for exactly the right moment and the right design. When the leaves and flower shapes on my bench finally met this polychrome Hubei turquoise, everything clicked into place.Robin’s egg blue with a whisper of mustard and warm chestnut brown. A stone with a magical quality that shifts depending on the light.Clusters of silver balls and a length of bead wire surrounding the stone, all hand formed and soldered into place. A split shank band stamped with a repeating pattern. Everything working together to let the stone do what it does best — shine.There’s a secret. A few tiny pallions of silver rest beneath the stone. Some stones carry history in them. This one carries centuries. 🌿 Uzbekistan turquoise has been mined from the Kyzylkum desert for over 8,000 years. Traders carried it along the Silk Road. Kings noted its superiority in their annals. It was the gemstone of ancient Eurasian exchange networks stretching from China to the Black Sea. And now this stone — cut by Siberian Gems, acquired through a benefit auction — has landed in my studio in the Pacific Northwest.The color is a spectacular light blue with thin chestnut brown veins. In one section a small circle emerges, outlined in lighter blue with a camel brown interior. It looks like a tiny island in a vast sea. Something ancient and alive. The sterling silver surround has whimsical oak shaped leaves curling up the sides and just over the stone. Silver balls edge the piece, some detailed with a shot plate pattern. A solid backplate. Wild Tendrils No. 05 🫧🌿These ones have a very specific energy. Fairy magic. Garden spell. Something small and alive.Delicate silver stem connections, swoops and little surprises throughout. A circular turquoise bead to quietly tie the pair together. A bell flower. A wire wrapped raw amethyst. Some pieces are made for one person and one person only. 💫🩷These earrings were made for my dear friend’s birthday. The beads tell a story — old moon trade beads from a strand we found together at the Tucson Gem Show last February, little turquoise beads, brass accents to bring out the warm highlights. And woven through them, sterling flat spirals from my earlier wire wrap days. A little piece of where I started.At the bottom of each earring hangs a hand stamped charm. A flower. A bird.A memory of a trip we took together. A bit of my past. Some pieces don’t start with a plan. They just arrive.A few days ago I picked up a book of designs by Sharilyn Miller — and discovered she learned her wire techniques from the same teacher I did, Lynne Merchant. The designs felt instantly like home. I made a pair of earrings from it and went for a little ride in the wayback machine — and suddenly Lynne was right there with me again, present in a way she hadn’t been in years.Then components started finding each other. Bali silver and Karen Hilltribe leaves I’d been collecting. A coiled wire technique — something Lynne first showed me years ago, a piece of what I still think of as the Kuchi coil, learned originally in Afghanistan. Ocean blue trade beads. My own meditation link. Brass, bronze, sterling. A hollow tube bead with an outer ring that spins — and when it spins, it sounds like wings.Somewhere in the making of it, I felt like a traveler collecting bits of metal and story from far away places. And then it arrived all at once — this is what a hummingbird sees when she flies. All the details of a wild world, gathered close.I’m calling her Hummingbird.
