At several times in the history of the Brontë estate its graveyard is said to have become a human cesspool, and rotting corpses were able to be seen through decimated tombs.

Consumption disease and death became rife in the area. Even now one can imagine the sight of decimation and destruction, what secrets these stone tombs must hold.

As I walked around the overgrown pathway I began to feel uneasy as I passed the lines of ancient tombs, all around me lay the tombs of the dead, truly a haunting site to behold.

An odd painting hung in old Grove House - in a remote part of North Yorkshire in Northern England, a portrait of a beautiful woman who was often seen to close her eyes, and sometimes smile. The Countess Elizabeth had died many years previously, by a fall from her horse; the count her father, a widower, had soon followed her, under mysterious circumstances.

Soon after their deaths, strange manifestations occurred in and around the house. Children in the district began to waste away, and the count and his daughter were believed to be Vampires.

A séance was held in the house by the then owner, an editor by trade, a man who was at first a sceptic regarding the paranormal, also present was a doctor and a psychic investigator; the year was 1907.

The editor asked ‘Is the lady living?’ Instead of replying, The table rapped out: ‘If you desire it I will appear to you bodily at two o’clock.’

The editor agreed. The editor did not believe in the supernatural, but nevertheless he sat up to wait for the countess, passing the time by writing an article.

At two o’ clock exactly he became aware of a rustling of a silk dress from outside the door. He called out ‘enter Elizabeth, the door’s open.’ To his horror the girl from the portrait glided into the room and stood smiling at him. Her eyes bored into his, his head swam and he could feel his senses slipping; desperately he tore his eyes away, and the smiling Elizabeth disappeared.

Whitby Abbey a towering ruin of epic proportions. This once mighty building is now a ghost of its former glory.

I have often wandered up the steep hill which leads to the crumbling ruins and pondered the scenes of violent conflict, murder and carnage.

The years of debauchery that took place at these very ruins must have been truly legendary. The glory days of this ancient monument are nothing, but echoes of centuries lost.

You can feel the cold silence here and it is not difficult to envisage that many of the abbey’s secrets must have been stored in the enormous fallen walls that now surround the old crumbling ruin.

Today all that remains of Whitby Abbey is scattered remnants and a shell that time has forgotten.

Everyone in Haworth knew not to walk through the churchyard after midnight.

One cold November night, a girl named Emily dared her brother to prove it was only an old superstition. They climbed the hill toward the graves, laughing as the wind rattled the bare trees.

Then Emily heard footsteps behind them.

They stopped.

The footsteps stopped.

They walked faster.

The footsteps followed.

At the oldest grave, Emily turned and saw a pale figure standing between the stones. Its face was hidden beneath a black veil.

Chancelade lies in the southwest of France and has a long historical past.
One look at this captivating place is enough to transport you back to another time. This part of town has changed very little for hundreds of years.

The town has a magnificent old manor house called a Logis. Largely abandoned and decaying the logis has an air of mystery about it, and is localy known as very much a haunted house.

The locals tell of an old woman dressed in grey who is said to haunt the lonely woods next to the logis, the woman is rumoured to have drowned in a river near to the woods.

Haworth, West Yorkshire, Northern England was the birthplace of the Brontë sisters, who produced some of the finest novels in the English language. They left their mark upon the world with such classics as Jane Eyre and the mighty Wuthering Heights.

Walking around the Brontë churchyard I began to feel uneasy as I passed the lines of ancient tombs, all around me lay the tombs of the dead, truly a haunting site to behold.

In the graveyard at Whitby Abbey, row after row of stone can be seen to stretch into the distance. Many tombs in the graveyard date from the 1600s their rain washed faces giving nothing away as to what they might have witnessed.

The ancient town of St Bonnet le Chateau lies in the of the southeast part of France in the Rhône-Alpes region.

As I approached the dark gothic looking church on the hill, I began to realise that this was not a conventional looking church at all, but something more resembling a castle, and was more a kin to a set from a horror film.

Built in the 17th century, this magnificent church contains an important collection of murals. Here one can see the tombs of many of the great noble men of this part of France.

Not to mention a well known underground crypt. It is there for no surprise that several ghosts are said to wander through these very aisles.

St Bonnet le Chateau is known locally for its ancient architecture and its church which contains a crypt.

As I entered the cold church I knew not what awaited me as I descended the ladder to the dark crypt. As a made the slow descent into the tomb, the air smelt damp and I began to feel the chill all around me, the first glimpse of the human remains was truly a shocking moment for me.
All around me were the mummified remains of cadavers, the flesh still intact. Not an easy thing to be surrounded by the dead.

One foggy night, a boy dared his friend to cut through Grove Road graveyard, the quickest way home. Among leaning stones and iron gates, silence pressed in, broken only by the crunch of gravel underfoot.

Halfway through, he saw a woman in black standing by a cracked angel statue. She didn’t move, didn’t breathe, but her head followed him as he walked past.

Behind him, the woman whispered his name.
