POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED
Creating this new Documentary Reel was a lengthy and profound exercise in refining my cinematic voice, and celebrating the moments that felt most personal—not because of what was happening beyond the frame, or what the people and places mean to me—but because each shot tells a story in my signature visual language. That is ultimately what I bring to every project, then and now: an eye for meaningful imagery, combined with storytelling instincts from 20+ years in the field, the edit and the classroom.

Immense gratitude to the talented collaborators, partners, subjects and support system that made this body of work possible 🙏 you know who you are, and I wouldn’t be here without you. by @jimaikman

Last weekend, “Big Jim: An American on Everest” had its world premiere at @BendFilmFestival! 🎥

Part of the American Alpine Club’s Legacy Series, “Big Jim” celebrates the late Jim Whittaker’s life and the 63rd anniversary of his historic ascent of Everest. With exclusive interviews, archival materials from both the AAC Library and invaluable contributors like Dianne Roberts (@tufasnails) and Leif Whittaker (@leifwhittaker), plus two minutes of added content for an even fuller story, this revamped re-release is already making a splash on the film circuit.

Stay tuned for a screening near you—our next stop is @FreshCoastFilm in Marquette, Michigan followed by @TheVIMFF in Vancouver! by @jimaikman

Her eyes first blinked in the womb somewhere around 26 weeks, but there wasn’t much to see in there. I watched them open to daylight for the first time on June 29th, and a universe was born. Then, her focus didn’t extend behind 6 inches or so—the world beyond that merely indistinct shape and color. Now, nearing 8 weeks later, she can see two feet, pulling in mind boggling data on the world around her, the shapes and colors given form and meaning. Fascinated by leaves and the contrast of shelved books, she stares in awe and curiosity—until the sounds of mom or dad pull her gaze to ours and we share moments of connection that stretch for eons. And my own peripheral vision dissolves with the rest of a world that used to be everything before she arrived. taken in Milky Way by @jimaikman

Only climbers know how good that first shave feels after a big objective.

The climbing part of expeditions is rewarding and everything, but what I love most is the excuse it provides for exploration—the chance to see things and meet people in places you would otherwise have no business traveling, disappearing into the obscurity of unusual destinations, chasing a weird dream that means everything and nothing. And, of course, there are the stories you bring home... the moments that get seared into your memory like grill marks on a steak. The simple stuff that feels casual at the time becomes thread in the fabric of an adventure.

Hopefully we all have photos that are simply too precious to share online - too pure to dilute with the observance of hundreds or thousands of strangers, who take no moment to pause and reflect on the strange alchemy of its sharing. Photos of daughters. The sunrise. A perfect ocean wave, frozen in place. Photos of a moment so fragile that its very utterance is an act of undoing… so special that we keep them for ourselves.

In the meantime, here’s a gorilla begrudgingly posing for my silly memory machine. Happy Tuesday. by @jimaikman

One week before my daughter was born on June 29, I skied up to Illumination Saddle, an iconic west-facing point high on Mt Hood, along with hundreds of other revelers, to witness the longest day of the year - and the final sunset of the first half of 2026. I was reminded of my 40th birthday earlier this year, when the sun set on the first half of my life (with any luck). And now, as I’ve become a father, the sun has set on many of the things that characterized my erstwhile youth. Especially sleep 😵‍💫

But then the sun rose anew on this blessed era of life that I never took for granted or even expected, illuminated by the glow of possibilities, intentions, presence and love… the first rays of light spilling into the valleys of my world like an alpine morning. I can’t wait to explore all the terrain of this fresh day, and this fresh little human that looks like me, and looks like Ali, and looks like herself, and looks like stardust. Someday she’ll watch the same sunset, from the same spot, and marvel at the same profound thresholds we cross in the course of a human experience. taken in Mt Hood by @jimaikman

During college, I got hopelessly hooked on rock climbing, and ratty posters of the world’s best adorned every room of our campus house. Dean Potter made a particular impression, embodying everything about the iconoclastic spirit that drew me to the sport. For Dean, climbing was not a hobby or athletic outlet—it was art, it was lifestyle, and it was rebellion. And it was great on a poster.

In 2008, within weeks of graduating from college, the first shoot of my professional career was Dean’s free BASE solo of The Rostrum, an iconic formation in Yosemite, and groundbreaking climb which he soloed in a BASE parachute (in case he fell). I was mostly there to anchor the legs of the tripod with my body weight and make fresh coffees on a camp stove, but for a 22 year old climber from Michigan who still had those old posters, I was living my dream.

On that same shoot, Dean had a duffel bag full of gear he couldn’t wear anymore (from a sponsor who dropped him) which he gave to me. I still wear his XXL expedition puffy on ski trips, and jog in his old shorts.

Over the years I did more work with Dean and got to know him a little more as a person, not the mythic hero of my imagination, and became more acquainted with his complexity. Then and now, his impression remains strong as one of the wildest sparks of life I’ve known in my own 40 years (three less than Dean when he died).

If you haven’t seen “The Dark Wizard” on HBO by the team at @senderfilms , I can’t recommend it enough, whether you know anything about climbing or not. It’s an incredibly intimate and faithful look at a man who was truly larger than life, and one of god’s own prototypes. I got to watch it in Boulder earlier this year with most of the cast and crew in attendance (one notable exception), and it was one of the more transcendent viewing experiences I’ve had with a documentary.

Fly free, Dean

I studied film and literature in college (Go Blue) and always assumed I’d work in fiction. But when I graduated, I realized I was more called to true stories—working in the field versus working on sound stages, and chasing subjects in the wild (human or otherwise). Planet Earth was at its apex and I thought maybe I could be a guy that sits in bird blinds for weeks in Papua New Guinea, waiting for the perfect shot. Instead I’ve spent nearly twenty years working mostly with adventure sports and historical stories—but the pull of wildlife and natural history has always been strong. I’ve been lucky to work on scientific documentaries in the Galápagos, South Africa and Peru, and now I’m developing a series in that space. We’ll see where the path leads.

In the meantime, here are a few wildlife encounters from my birthday trip to Costa Rica.

During the solstice in the Great Gorge of the Ruth Glacier (in the Alaska Range below Denali), the sun barely dips below the horizon. Dusk lingers for hours, even within one of the deepest gorge’s in North America. It’s hard to get a bad shot.

On this expedition in 2009, early in my career, @renan_ozturk and @zaquesmyth were our neighbors on the glacier, climbing the gorge’s walls while I shlepped camera gear for a @senderfilms @natgeo series. They relocated after snowmelt opened crevasses under their camp, and they had to belay each other out of the tent to go to the bathroom. by @jimaikman

On the evening of my 40th birthday, tucked within the lush, forested hills of Costa Rica, somewhere between the four course meal and Big Lebowski viewing, I laughed until I cried in a puddle of friends, barely containing my gratitude from bursting into a super nova. The people in our lives, and the shared memories we create on wacky adventures, harrowing challenges and everything in between, are the truest form of wealth, and I couldn’t be happier to enter a new decade with all of that currency. ❤️ taken in Uvita, Costa Rica by @jimaikman
