The Toyota Fortuner received a rather significant update last year—a 48-volt mild-hybrid electric system with an 8.5kW belt-alternator-starter replacing the conventional set-up, albeit with just the 4x4 AT powertrain. Yes, it's a two+ tonne vehicle and the benefits may not seem huge; but they're there.

The start sequence remains vastly similar but it's the engine-stop-start system that is telling. With a dedicated 207Wh 48-volt lithium-ion battery, it stays off at long traffic signals exceeding 90 seconds at times and silently restarts the moment the foot eases off the brake pedal. Toyota says it will give more than 40 kilometres more on a full tank. That tank is 80 litres! But as the usage patterns may differ so will the savings and benefits. I regularly saw 9-10 km/l in the city and I didn't always go easy.

My outlook is primarily the benefit of an extremely potent turbo-diesel engine. It makes 500 Nm which is more than any average naturally aspirated 5.0 V8 petrol. And I could drive at 40 km/h at 1,200 rpm. The sheer raw grunt of the oil-burner is music to my ears. And the clout, the aura, that comes with a Fortuner—and a white Fortuner at that—is rather unmatched in many parts of the country. I briefly became the very person I used to warn others about. 😈
