Such a fun & surreal night at @emptybottle watching @medicinestunts and @qnpofficial w/ @michaelzerang. Pretty life-affirming to see these creative fires burning strong for over 30 years. It feels good to be in the presence of genius. Four people each with a singular vision. taken in Empty Bottle by @jimmagas

I composed & produced the music for filmmaker Usama Alshaibi's (@djinnisin 2025 feature, THIS HAS ALREADY HAPPENED, premiering at the @pebblesunderground film festival. It's streaming on their site for FREE for ONE WEEK ONLY (link in bio).

Alshaibi's 58-minute film, shot in Colorado during the pandemic, is a meditation on loneliness, time and the nature of self and reality. Haunting and frightening, often in subperceptual ways, this film will leave no doubt that the gummy has kicked in. It's surreal but unlike Jodorowsky, nothing is exploded. Alshaibi's surrealism (and mine, too, I suppose) is fractal-minded clarity, where the beautiful Colorado winter surroundings imbue a sense of inexorable doom (no, it's nothing like THAT film) but it may lie somewhere in the wide constellation that Kubrick's epic hotel and the liminal spaces of the Backrooms. Where do you run when the monster is your mind or reality itself? Or is it simply a film about loneliness and depression? I'm not film critic--I'm a composer with zero objectivity, so I'll leave viewers and critics to form your own opinions.

Musically, this was a chance for me to really try some interesting ideas. The film called for a subtle touch. I wanted it to sound like it was coming from inside the while also giving voice to the foreboding beauty of the lonely Colorado winter and the universe beyond. I say music but I tried to create something that felt like it was spontaneously created by the patterns in nature, in symbiosis with the human incarnation, which, of course is not separate from patterns in nature, but an integral part of them. I'll shut up and let the movie do the fvcking.

I'm honored to be granted the trust to help realize Alshaibi’s vision. There's no time like Sunday afternoon to close the curtains and watch this strange and beautiful film. One week only!

Deep Purple slapback for @waldo.jeffries / @mike.mcgonigal . In 1983, I saw Black Sabbath on the 'Born Again' tour. This was pretty much how I got into Deep Purple. It's not like they got played on the radio in the U.P., so one man's classic rock is another man's 'discovery'. To be honest, it was hard to find other kids into Sabbath, even. Kids were more into Ratt, Motley Crue, Scorpions, Priest, etc. people might draw the Blue oyster cult logo on their folder but probably couldn't name songs other than 'Reaper' and 'Burnin'', two Meltzer classics, one that he got paid for and the other he didn't. My friend Jason and I started using the term 'ITM' for bands that sounded too 'in the mold' [of shitty soundalike arena metal]. I had to concede that, in the mid-80s, Deep Purple were starting to show signs of ITM, along with Priest, Scorps, Nuge, etc.

PS I had absolutely ZERO knowledge of IDM, EBM or EDM. In fact, they weren't terms at all then, except maybe EBM. In College Biker number one (available for free download on my substack of the same name), I referred to Scissor Girls as 'electronica', but that wasn't a term yet, either. I only used it because I was really into Les Baxter and Martin Denny, at the time, and @theeazita was one of two people I knew who used a synthesizer or even really knew what they were. @putney__swope was the other--it was all Greek to me. Ah yes, naivete, retroactively converted to prescience.

Look how I spelled 'Tokayo'. I remember feeling a bit of confusion in the pounding music and fog. "How do I spell this?", wondered a be spectacled teenager with a belly full of blackberry brandy.

I don't think there's any perfect Deep Purple album, but there's usually good tracks most of them. Great live albums too. How about when they all cut their hair and started playing casinos? Happens to everybody, I guess. I saw BOC at an amusement park.Fellow olds know that I'm not referring to the electronic group who just had their music used by Tramp w/o permission, but rather the most up-to-date moniker held by the artists known as Stalk-Forrest Group aka Soft White Underbelly. by @jimmagas
