Skateboarding is therapy for Minho, a psychology student inspired by his internal journey to help others. "During lockdown, just going through mental struggles - anxiety, even just over-thinking or thinking about Covid, when you get on the board, you just forget about everything because you’re just focusing on trying not to fall," he says. "I would distract myself from feelings of depression or feelings of anxiety. It’s just doing something else rather than sitting in my room, sitting in those feelings." Minho treats skateboarding as "me time" and prefers skating alone. "My roommate would sometimes say to me - 'every time you come back from skateboarding, it seems like your mood has lifted a lot.' That’s probably something I didn’t even realise until he said it, like, 'oh this can really help me.'" Read more skate stories on my site ok. Thanks pal @minhokim4. by @jimmyness_
Kicking off 2022 with former world champion and Australian skate legend Renton Millar. "I was pro for like 10 or 15 years. At that time, there were great opportunities for vert skaters. I made some good money and had amazing experiences. I travelled the world non-stop for 12 years. I did about 40 back to back summers from 1998 to about 2012. I got to witness potentially one of the best times in skating when I started." Now 46, Millar relishes every time his wheels hit the halfpipe. When not chatting under Prahan's monolithic ramp, he’s often silhouetted in the sky above. Renton barely pauses for breath while vividly eulogizing the sport that has taken him from Rome to Rio. "That's the other thing with the time I've had in skating. When I first started, we didn't know how long you could go. All the pros were like 18, we thought they were going to be done at 24. So every year from age 22, we thought was going to be our last. Now I've been doing it long enough, I'm just gonna keep going," he reflects. Rubbing my compressed vertebrae as an adult, it's hard to fully comprehend his longevity. I tell him about a magazine I bought at age 12 with him on the cover. Millar extolls the virtues of eating well and keeping healthy. His passion leaves no room for complacency. Last year, he filmed 45 tricks to celebrate four decades on the earth. He helped judge this year's Olympics and rode the cemented contours every morning at 6.30 am. Read more about Renton on my website. by @jimmyness_
Originally a surfer from NSW, Kooper loves skating's diverse community and says it changed him for the better.   "It may not be a team sport, but you've got a team with you at all times, he reflects. "It's opened my eyes to be friends with anyone. Even if you're very different, that's who your real friends are. Even if you're complete opposites, you look at each other like 'f*ck being alive without this.' It just makes you grateful for having that sport in your life." Thanks Harry! @grog_horrors And thanks Melbourne, for opening up again 🙃. More cool stuff to come. by @jimmyness_
"I don't know what I would have done without skateboarding," Sam proclaims with a ready smile. The bushy-maned beatnik says skating kept him from temptations that ensnared others in his hometown. "Sometimes I feel a little bit guilty that a lot of my friends did fall victim to that sort of stuff, and I wondered for a long time why I got out of it. I think it's because I had so many interests that weren't in front of me." he reflects. When school fell short, Sam's brain took him elsewhere. He was inspired by skating's "do it yourself" ethos. The young radical moved to Melbourne at just 17. He also honours his father's influence. "Ever since I was a kid, I was interested in alternative lifestyles. My dad was a hot-rodder, so he was into making weird cars, and he encouraged me to do things for myself." With wood, steel and rubber as his medium, Sam continues to express his singularity. He leaps into improvised stunts, vintage board grabs, flatland flips and freestyle twirls. A flower child in the Tik-Tok era, Sam's freak flag is at full mast. From beaded necklace to patched trousers, his hippy spirit lives in the physical. But as we chat under Moreland overpass, Sam's unfaked sincerity is most compelling. "I just like to hang out with my friends, do a couple of weird tricks and smile. That's skateboarding." •Check out more stories on my website. by @jimmyness_
Anja moved to Sydney from Sweden, 15 years ago. She won a gold medal in boxing at the Commonwealth Games and has reached similar emotional highs while skateboarding. "Everyone thinks that success has to be something grand, but I think success is relative to where you are in your life and what you put into that moment," she says. "I try to be creative with everything I do. I love looking good when I skate. I see the whole thing as a creative expression and an exploration of what I can do, what I can teach my body to do and what I can push through." Rich has been losing his vision since he was diagnosed with the genetic condition Retinitis Pigmentosa (or RP) in 2018. He has a declining 10% eyesight as well as a host of physical issues. "When I first got diagnosed, it was like okay, 'vision loss,' what does that mean? What can somebody do with that? Then I saw the American blind skater @danthemancina, and it was like 'holy shit, I can still do something." Primarily a BMX rider with an appreciation for skate culture, Rich had to relearn skateboarding as his eyesight faded. "I started skating again with blindness. If anybody out there is like 'I can do that too,' then that's the ultimate goal," he says. Read more about Rich on my website.
