Rerecorded Body
Jul 29 - Aug 9, 2023
9AM-5PM

This workshop examines the human body as a form of expression and focuses on alternative ways of slab building and glazing. Clay has a rich history as both a functional tool and a medium for sculpture. It is also a great medium for recording an artist’s gestures and emotions. Participants are encouraged to develop their own artistic voice and explore different ways of connecting their ideas with their individual work. Through in-class demonstrations, slide lectures, and artists discussions, students explore new ways of using clay and glaze. Students gain a fuller understanding of the use of ceramics as a visual language.

Join me for a one day workshop at @ceramics.boxfactory on abstract figuration in clay. I’ll walk through how I build human figures with slabs, from drawing and planning to execution. We’ll start with an artist talk, then get into demos, beginning with sketching and collage exercises.

Grateful for the chance to visit Jun Kaneko’s studio. Seeing work at that scale in person was genuinely inspiring, and getting to share the day with such a great group made it even more memorable.

Thank you to everyone who made this possible 🙏

We’re thrilled to welcome Jinsik Yoo back to Greenwich House Pottery for a full-day demonstration exploring the expressive possibilities of abstracted figurative sculpture. Working with slabs, Jinsik will guide participants through his process of creating human figures—from the first sketch to the final form.

The day begins with an artist talk, offering a window into Jinsik’s practice and the ideas that drive his sculpture. From there, he’ll demonstrate the figure sketching and collage drawing exercises at the heart of his process: a way of thinking through form on paper before ever touching clay.

The bulk of the workshop focuses on the hands-on work of building with slabs. Jinsik will demonstrate several structural approaches—showing how he constructs, edits, and refines form using the collage drawings as a guide. Expect an honest look at the technical decisions that go into abstracted figurative work: how to build something that holds together structurally while staying alive as a sculpture.

Toward the end of the day, Jinsik will share finished works alongside practical insights into glazing, surface treatment, and the lessons learned from his studio practice—the kind of hard-won knowledge that doesn’t always make it into a technique book.

Tuition for this workshop is $150. Current students receive $30 off, contact registration office prior to registration. Follow the link in our bio to register.

Jinsik Yoo is a ceramic sculptor from Daejeon, South Korea. He creates work that abstracts the human form in order to think about desire, queer relations, and otherness. Yoo earned his MFA from Alfred University in 2019, and completed the residency program at The Clay Studio in Philadelphia following graduation. In January 2024, Yoo held his first US solo exhibition at Greenwich House Pottery. He presented his first solo show in Korea in July 2025 at Seoul’s DrawingRoom Gallery, where he is a represented artist. He joined the University of South Dakota as an Assistant Professor in fall 2025.

Jinsik will offer demonstrations from 8:30am to 11am on Monday, February 16th and Tuesday, February 17th with an Artist Talk Monday evening at 5pm. These events are all open to the public, please join us in welcoming Jinsik. by @jinsikyoo

Misnamed, 2025, 10.5(H) x 9 x 4 inches, glazed earthenware, luster, wax, enamel, graphite

This work was created for an exhibition focused on the Asian Zodiac, and reflects my experience as a first-generation immigrant navigating linguistic and cultural dissonance.
When I was first asked to create a goat for this exhibition, I instinctively linked it to my Western zodiac sign, Aries. In the Korean version of the general Asian, or Chinese Zodiac, the goat becomes a sheep––that is, the same species as my Western sign.
Later, I realized this connection was rooted in Western astrology, but in the Korean zodiac—the twelve-year cycle—I was born in 1985, the year of the Ox. Instead of forcing a link to the goat, I chose to focus on this moment of confusion itself.
This misunderstanding reflects the ongoing cultural and linguistic gaps I face as a person living within diaspora, having moved to the United States in my thirties.
Something that’s supposed to be so fixed––our signs, our identites––depends on context, our movements through time and space.
Born an Ox in Korea, I lived as an Ox. In the U.S., I became a ram, and in this new context, my identity began to take on new shapes. The story of this journey, of this shifting sense of self formed from struggle and desire, liberation and longing, is told in the tension between these signs and their animals. by @jinsikyoo
