Introducing Jin Tian @jintianetc , China-born, German-British dual citizen; based in London, UK. Supported by the Paul Desty Scholarship Award.

After escaping a decade-long cult crime in China, Jin rebuilt her life in Germany before relocating to the UK. Although initially forced toward a medical career path, art remained the constant thread throughout the many different roles she has played in life.

This year at the Royal College of Art, her practice explores the physics theory of “emergence” through two five-metre paintings built from self-similar patterns resembling cellular and neural networks. Through layering and the surrender of rational control, the works evolve unpredictably into forms greater than the sum of their individual parts.

“Emergence is the process through which complex systems develop properties that their individual components do not possess independently.”

Alongside painting, she also writes - both practices expressing what a single form alone cannot contain.

“You need to be much bigger than painting in order to paint greatly.”

Jin continues to explore the world and express herself fearlessly.

Exhibiting my poems at @fabriclondonofficial last night - it still feels surreal.. 👾 Challenging a non-mother tongue at the highest level has been incredibly hard, yet deeply rewarding.
Thank you to everyone who stopped by to read and encourage me 🧚‍♀️ I’ll continue with poetry alongside painting - both truly make me happy :)
