Multimedia artist and cultural worker Jose Olarte inaugurates LOOP SPACE, Gravity Art Space’s new micro-site for immersive, media-based works.

In "To Find Gold in a World That Needs Silver", Olarte confronts the politics of value and survival through layered visual narratives. Installed within the tight quarters of LOOP SPACE—a cubicle-sized space designed for focused encounters—the work draws from the artist’s activist practice, compressing systemic critique into a form that is both intimate and unflinching.

LOOP SPACE is a site for video, sound, and time-based installations that demand proximity and attention. As its first occupant, Olarte sets the tone with a presentation that resists spectacle but compels presence.

Like the flame that dazzles the moth with its glow, light’s deceptive luster can entrance its viewers to lose their focus and bring them into a state of ambiguity. As rays of light glare from multiple directions, they create a state of disorientation, which is further amplified by the unpredictable movement of the shadows as they dance with the light. Reminding us most profoundly, that the brighter the light the darker the shadows. And as the pervasive shadows casts one into further uncertainty, it engulf us into a darkness that tries to conquer and dominate.

Light and its myriad properties are explored in the treatment of this exhibition curated by The 5th House. In “To Cast A Shadow, There Must First Be Light,” the curators prompted 21 artists to create objects with “light” while defying its traditional forms and essential functions loosely inspired by the parol. Here, the artists used a diversified selection of materials and mediums to embody the characteristics of “light” and how they illuminate and cast shadows upon a space. And as their brightness shines through in this convergence of light, they collectively resist darkness and its subjugation.

“At times we drift in and out of reality, questioning what is real — whether something really happened. Most adults right now would have lived through two distinct eras of the analog and the digital. The digital age feeds into the internet age, where the middleman (an editor, a fact checker, a historian) is bypassed for anyone to go ahead and share anything with the rest of the world who is able to download data. This unfortunately created an era of post-truth — 2016’s Oxford’s Word of the Year.

Defined as “relating to or denoting circumstances in which objective facts are less influential in shaping public opinion than appeals to emotion and personal belief,” nothing seems to be as definitive of it as the circumstances of the 1972 declaration of Martial Law in the Philippines. Culminating in the 1986 EDSA revolution, five years after Martial Law was lifted, it was a domestic event that resonated the world over, and the Philippines was hailed as a model for democracies all over.

Fast-forward to 50 years after the declaration, and 36 years after the revolution, cries of #neverforget and #neveragain were drowned out as the Philippines seemed to have democratically voted the very same family that was ousted for its track record of impunity and corruption back into power. Did people forget about that shit?”

Addressed to Empire itself, Abrigo, Dayrit, and Olarte’s 𝘞𝘩𝘢𝘵 𝘗𝘰𝘸𝘦𝘳 𝘓𝘦𝘢𝘷𝘦𝘴 𝘕𝘰 𝘙𝘰𝘰𝘮 𝘧𝘰𝘳 𝘈𝘶𝘵𝘰𝘯𝘰𝘮𝘺? (𝘙𝘦𝘱𝘢𝘳𝘢𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯𝘴 𝘧𝘰𝘳 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘓𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘰𝘧 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘓𝘰𝘴𝘵) takes stock of the imperial project from its tools and scrap. In the tenor of Fanon, the works insist with bravado that any “aid” from empire isn’t charity, but something that is due—and it’s “time for the capitalist powers to pay up.” (LM)

** 陳亭宇 (Taiwan) **
Chen Ting-Yu is an installation artist. Through whimsical interpretations of objects and symbols, her artworks investigate and articulate human experiences, uncovering little moments of felicity and erasing familiar bodily recollections. Recent works shift the choice of objects into the virtual interface and integrate them with real-world spaces.

** Jose Olarte (Philippines) **
Jonathan Jose Zamora Olarte works with new media, objects, text, and installation. By recontextualizing the historical data behind his chosen medium, he creates artifacts to expose and criticize the visible and invisible power structures. His works invite viewers to reconsider how they spatially perceive and interpret contemporary Philippine society and the modern world.

** 劉安婕 (Taiwan) **
Liu An-Chieh primarily employs painting and ready-made installations in her artworks. The artist transforms the family space into a symbolic stage by focusing on emotional elements such as wavering anxiety, sorrowful memories, and desire. In such a manner, viewers experience the emotional fluctuations and conflicts that arise within the domestic environment.

** Ronyel Compra (Philippines) **
Visual artist who experiments with indigenous materials and various media—painting, video, sculptural installations, performances, and printmaking. Influenced by historical and personal narratives from his community, Compra integrates techniques used in local crafts production and trades into his practice as reflections of memories, history, and experiences of places and his hometown.

** 宋海容 (Taiwan) **
Sung Hai-Jung is a visual and performance artist. She utilizes various mediums—plant pigment painting, sculptures, environmental installation, video, performance art, and dance. Inspired by nature, her works often tenderly evoke profound sensations of the natural environment and topics like dreams, presence, memory, and existence. by @jj.zo
