As summer 2026 wraps up, new collections emerge and the work keeps alive and growing. A productive season filled with new and old people, wonderful places and experiences, mourning and letting go. Now I’m back to teaching and settling into another year of living and working in the studio, trying to keep it all moving, growing, and alive- over 60 drawings this season #whatistime? #drawingarchive #josejoaquinfigueroa #presentcompany #thebridge by @jjfiqui

A car hit me while I was riding my bike a couple of months ago, and all I got was this painting.

It’s worlds teachers day! 🍎 🍎

Proudly serving youth in the Bay Area for over a decade. Orgulloso de enseñar a jóvenes en estados unidos, muchos Latinos e inmigrantes
My younger gay self is in awe to know I support new comers from all over the continent including Venezuela, and that I’m there to uplift and support all my students, and definitely protect the queer ones

some receipts of my years of service, what makes a good teacher? 😘 😘

🌳 DOLORES PARK DIORAMA 🌴
On view until December 15th @paloaltoartcenter, part of “Grow”,curated by @theartistcollector.

Since I moved to the Bay Area, Dolores Park has been my place to observe, and create. This vibrant public space—with its Pride celebrations, Hunky Jesus pageant, and everyday gatherings—has inspired me since 2015. Located near Mission High School, where I worked teaching SF youth these past two years, it was the perfect spot to draw and unwind after work.

I’m thrilled to share Dolores Park Diorama, featuring 27 drawings made while lounging in the park, and my first exploration of 4D—> 2D -> 3D, translating my 2d marks into 3D forms. This piece is a tribute to the city’s rhythm and life in the Bay. And my love for clay!

✨ Come see it!

I sculpted these figures shortly after joining a protest in San Francisco, where Venezuelans gathered around a statue of Simon Bolivar to condemn an election where the people’s voice has been disregarded, and where protestors have faced imprisonment, torture, and silencing. In this moment, Bolivar’s legacy of liberation stands in stark contrast to the fragile reality of democracy—a reminder of how easily power can distort truth. As the U.S. approaches its own election, these figures reflect both hope and fear: a hope that democracy can hold strong, and a fear of how easily it can be undermined. 🌉🇻🇪🗳️

If you’ve been thinking about collecting one of my pieces, here’s a meaningful opportunity to do so while supporting a Bay Area arts space that has shaped and held so many of us.

NEW SUNS: Resist & Rejoice, Southern Exposure’s annual benefit auction, is happening this Friday, April 18. My work will be up alongside 130+ artists.

Southern Exposure is facing serious financial uncertainty. These kinds of spaces — where risk, experimentation, and community dialogue can thrive — need our care and attention, now more than ever.

Come through, bring a friend, and help hold this space.
