Footprints (7C/V9) -
I saw a video of @letadickinson ascend this problem in March of this year. Astonished by its beauty and sheer size, and planning to go to Bishop at the end of the year, it immediately went to the top of my list, and was the #1 goal for this trip.

As the months passed and I prepared for the trip, aware of the potential for injury on this climb, I began to reflect on all my life's experiences up to this point. I was reminded of a span of time when I was a child where I endured many years of emotional and psychological abuse from my peers. In this period, I recall feeling without escape, in a constant state of fear. Weak. Worthless. I was sure that nothing could be done to turn the tide of where I felt my life was heading.

I found climbing years later at 21, and watched my body, perceptions, and philosophy on life change. Years of hard work, determination, and struggle led to a strengthening of character, and a complete reorientation of my direction in life.

It's strange to think that in my attempt to break away from the fears and pains inflicted upon me all those years, that in some way, I was being controlled by them, and they were informing my decisions in real time - all the time. However, I also realized that as agonizing as it was to have gone through what I did, that the experience was utterly invaluable. A life filled with comfort, no challenges, and no struggle is a life without growth - directionless, without meaning.

I then realized why I was subconsciously attracted to this climb. An ascent of it to me meant a rejection of a lifelong, deep-rooted and enduring fear. A challenge to be overcome. But the meaning was two-fold. The climb's form - majesty, set in front of the incredible Eastern Sierras at its rear - was also an adventure to be celebrated.

When I finally mounted the boulder, I felt nothing. No fear or trepidation. I thought at the end something inside of me might change, or I might gain a new understanding of some sort. But by the time I reached the top, I realized nothing had changed. The work had already been done in all the years past.

How far we've come! And how far we've left to go. The journey never ends. ❤️ taken in Bishop, California by @jjmunoz_

🌹 - La Marie-Rose (6A) - My merciful wife allowed a leg of our honeymoon to be in Fontainebleau, France this past March, and I got about 3 1/2 days to climb there for the first time! With such a short time there, I wanted to try to get on as many of the classics in Bas Cuvier as I could. Thinking the climbs in the lower grades would yield quickly, I soon found myself painfully mistaken! 😆 Everything from V0-V5 is absolute NAILS. La Marie-Rose, the apparent first 6A/V3 in the world, felt more like 7A/V6, about the same difficulty as La Joker 7A, the first 7A in the world, on its other side. Fontainebleau is truly a masterclass in delicate, disciplined movement and body awareness. It's like nowhere I've climbed before. If only I could spend at least a month here! It still wouldn't be enough 🥲

- Le Trou du Simon (6A) - Another Bas Cuvier classic, this actually took me more tries than anything else I sent in the few days I was there (besides L'Hélicoptère (7A), I believe). It felt like 7A+/V7 🤣 Another observation about Fontainebleau is the large presence of families and kids there, in many scenarios to not even climb per se, many just picnicking, and relaxing. The place truly feels like a wonderland of mystery, with the rock's abstract, otherworldly shapes, and I can imagine what a blast it must be to grow up here. France is blessed!

🛫 High Planes Drifter - After doing Footprints and Soul Slinger, I was beginning to get exhausted but I had a little daylight left, and remembered there was another big classic on the list - High Planes Drifter. I received beta from some shorter folk, and on the first go, a too-high heel popped, ending up with me landing on my back from a decent height. The lesson from Soul Slinger, trusting your intuition, and working with beta that fits your own body, no matter how it looks, came to mind. Next go, I decided to just stand up with lower feet, and made it to the top, just as the sun began setting. Magical sunset moments are my favorite. 😊🌇

Apparently, the original ascensionist, Dale Bard named this climb "High Planes Drifter", as in geometric planes, but many have more commonly heard of the movie, "High Plains Drifter", hence the widespread colloquial spelling. 📐

👻 Soul Slinger (V9/7C) - Faked myself out on this one! Tried going far left before the last move to a little "nothing" hold on my first go, forgetting to bump the right hand up for the last big move, and got sucked into alternatively trying the "accepted" beta for over an hour, with no luck. About an hour later, deciding to give it one more go and walk away, I tried my original "tall" beta, and it went nicely!

One of the things I learned on this trip was to not get sucked into trying what everyone else does. If you're a bit on the outside of the normal height curve (shorter or taller), it's probably better to go with your gut and do what's within your wheelhouse!

Thanks to @bob0ddy for the psych and confidence at the end!

🏔️ A few V8's I was able to snatch in Bishop on our short trip there!

🎳 Ten Pin Trial - The lowest sit-start to the Bowling Pin boulder in the Buttermilks. Just two hard moves into the V6 sit-down to Bowling Pin. I only had 45 minutes from start to finish to try this boulder on our last day, but was able to get it with minutes to spare! A grand boulder indeed! The angle at the end captures the vastness and beauty of the area for sure. Poor camera angle at the beginning, though 😢 Wish I had time to set up a second cam..

🪰 Flyboy - Another great line we walked past in the snow on the first day out, that I also knew I had to try 😆 Overhanging and crimpy, just what you'd expect.

🪩 Disco Diva - Went out to spot friends on a light climbing/rest day, watched all of them try this thing, and got psyched so you know how that goes 😅 Snaked all the beta from @nathan.ontherocks , and was able to get it third go or so though, maintaining rest-day status 😌

Bishop is a really magical place! Can't wait to return!

Go Go Gadget Left (7C/V9)
Summer Lug (7B, V7/8)

Shaving off a couple pounds since the summer when I started trying this, and a slight beta modification proved to do the trick a couple days back. Temperamental New England weather, and real life make perfect, crisp, sunny days out with friends rare and highly appreciated. The magical overhead leaf show is one of my favorite things about the area we call home, and I feel blessed to get to see it every year. 🍁🍂

I haven't climbed much in the lines, and it's been refreshing to try a bunch of stuff I've never seen before. Summer Lug was quite fun, the opening sequence especially.

Bishop in a couple weeks! There's been much preparation this year for a trip I've wanted to take ever since I started climbing! 🏜️

🍤 Bottom Feeder (5.13A) - On the first of our mini-moon stops, we went to Rumney so that Chung could meet my excellent, badass, climbing fiend buddies, and we of course went to Waimea 'cause it's the prettiest wall around..

Although making good progress, I've been hitting a mental wall trying Charlie for the last couple years, and realized I need to start trying all the other climbs I've not yet touched on the rest of the cliff, because there's so much amazing climbing to be sampled there. With the help of @freebirdrising and @_andrew_bruno_, who pointed out some key invisible feet, I was able to get to the top of this one!

Seolddugi4 (7B+) 🅱️ - Set by @pangpang_2 - Still trying to regain that crimp strength of olde, but the Moonboard is here to help 😊 Feels like the strength is coming back, and I'm reminded of how important it is to train on the angle of wall that you want to perform on, so I haven't been focusing on the 60's as much! Took 4 sessions to get this one but it's coming back! 😁

When I was young, I used to think about what it was like for people to find gold, diamonds, be born beautiful, win the lottery, those kind of experiences people daydream of - ones that fall into your lap, and people attribute to "luck". As I've grown older, I've attributed these lucky moments to things like driving down a highway and not hitting a single traffic light, stepping outside in the evening for an unrelated task, to unexpectedly find yourself bathed in the glow of the golden hour as a gorgeous sunset lights the sky on fire, or randomly seeing the aurora Borealis in your backyard (which happened!).

I wondered recently, what if those "lucky" experiences could be.. distilled into a person, another human being?

I have a friend whom I work with who told me when she first met her (now) wife, that she knew the moment she met her that she was going to marry her. I said, "How do you know something like that?" "You just know, and when you meet your person, you're just gonna know." Highly skeptical, I replied, "How's that? I mean, you know because you get along, or have similar beliefs, or X, Y & Z, and that's how you know." and she says, "No, you're just gonna know. 🙂" Yet unconvinced, I said, "Yeah, OK. Well see."

Then I met Chung. And on the first day that I met her, I recalled what my friend had told me, and immediately thought, "Oh. So that's what she meant - you're just gonna know." In the months that followed, I observed an ease of communication, a peace I hadn't felt before, a grace and lightness to the way she moved in the world, and a way she left each person she interacted with better off than when she found them. I could keep going on, but I will spare you~

So I don't wanna brag, but I feel like one of those people who won the lottery, was born beautiful, or found some diamonds, like I'm dreaming, and don't want to wake up.

Also, gentlemen, find you a woman who willingly agrees to drive to Michigan to pick up a Dance Dance Revolution machine in a noisy, uninsulated diesel van with no air conditioning, 10 1/2 hours each way (16 1/2 hours on the return when a tractor trailer in front of you flips over at 1230 AM). That's true love. ❤️ by @jjmunoz_

🍪 - Cookies & Creatine (V8/7B) -
- Lord Din (V7/7A+) -

× The summer heat is almost here', and we're ready for it!

A little warm yesterday for bouldering, but after scoping these couple climbs out when the tops were iced over a couple months ago, we came back ready to rock. @tperro1 figured out the top of Lord Din for us, which resulted in back to back ascents, and a beta suggestion from me to him resulted in a rather interesting way to start Lord Din for those with other-worldly mobility. His ascent of it was so flawless and graceful I couldn't resist including it in the video! 😆

Had this great song running through my head all the whole evening, which was quite fitting for night time bouldering!

- 🌉 - During my first trip to CA, determined that the state has way too much traffic, highways that cause your tires to make strange harmonic noises when you drive over them, seemingly limitless rock, a lot of people who ~really~ love Disney, amazing parks (I mean look at this surreal jungle gym on the beach) and perfect weather every day. I prefer to continue suffering in NJ, however 😊 The mission of the trip was also accomplished ~

▫️Shoulder Move (7C) [ 🅱️ ] - Set by @yannick_flohe - After climbing on our 45° 2016 Moonboard for so many years, it's crazy to feel just how much difference a few degrees makes. This last move felt impossible for so long, and so far away 😭 After a few sessions at @gardenstaterocks at the standard 40°, now equipped with my @raviolibiceps cloak which provides +3 agility and strength, I was able to tick it off, and surprised myself by hitting the last move static, too. Hoping to start working into the more often ascended 7C's now that I primarily have the most wretched 7B's left 😂
