With rain on and off all day long, we knew it was a pretty big gamble taking the boat to dinner. By the time dessert was served, it was a torrential downpour and we were looking downright moronic. Bracing for a miserable ride home and calming down 5 very unhappy and soon to be drenched kids, the sky suddenly opened up and cleared completely. With not a single other boat on the lake and the water as smooth as glass we were treated to an epically perfect ride back home. #family #memories #beautiful #rainbow #ADK #love #lakelife by @jjoneill12

There's something special about opening day of rifle season. Sure, bow hunting is far more challenging and requires much more skill & strategy. But the tradition and nostalgia that comes with the rifle opener is just palpable. We ate dinner last night at some tiny local restaurant in podunk USA and every person in there was dressed in camo and fervently talking about their plans for the morning. Old timers and teenagers alike, breaking bread, laughing, smiling and teeming with excitement for what may come. It's an energy that's simply indescribable to someone who hasn't experienced it but it's just so damn powerful. What a great weekend and an absolutely perfect morning in the spring turkey woods. After sitting through miserable weather yesterday, today was textbook perfection. Ideal weather, covered in gobbles all morning. I called in 3 toms off the roost but watched as they hung up at 85 yards and started to make a big circle around me. I knew they would swing back around and used every ounce of restraint not to over call them. Sure enough, about 25 minutes later I hear some crunching twigs, ever so slowly turn my head, and lo and behold there's a big tom walking right past me at 5 yards away! I didn't even have my gun up and don't hunt in a blind, so my heart rate absolutely exploded. I tried not to make eye contact and waited patiently for an opportunity to get my gun up and settled the bead. At about 25 yards the 12 gauge barked and dropped the big ole tom dead in his tracks. The perfect end to a perfect hunt!

If this year has taught us anything it's the importance of sustenance and self reliance. Supply shortages, lines for basic necessities, government encouraging you to report and turn in your friends and neighbors. Never in my life have I felt so strongly about the significance of being able to live off the land. Do not for one second trust the government or corporate America to take care of you, and for God's sake don't DEPEND on it. Eat what you harvest, whether it's an urban rooftop garden or a Rocky Mountain bull elk. Learn to provide, hone your skills, and pass it on. I've been so incredibly blessed this year to take 2 great bucks in 2 different states and share it all with my family and most importantly my children. This little human right here ❤❤. In all my time on Earth, nothing changed my life more significantly than the day you were born. You made me a father and permanently changed my name in our household to "daddy". Your sweet little voice and witty sass can both melt my heart and send me into fits of laughter. Well, opening day couldn't have gone any better even if I had written a script. I successfully filled my antlerless tag, and had the good fortune of seeing exactly where he dropped so I knew it'd be an easy pack out. Now for you other NJ folks, you know this meant I had "earned a buck" and could now legally shift my sights to the big boys. With about an hour of daylight left, a bachelor group of 4 bucks came directly downwind of me and hung up behind my stand blowing at me. Frozen like a statue I prayed they'd relax and move in to start grazing, but it was unlikely because they were now on high alert. Suddenly a yearling buck burst through the thicket on the opposite side and went to town on the freshly dropped acorns in this Oak stand. When the other bucks saw him, they let their guard down and crossed my scent line to begin feeding also. This 3.5 year old 9 pointer was a buck I had scouted all year, and while he wasn't my biggest, I had already decided I'd take him if given the opportunity. When he finally presented a perfect broadside shot I let the arrow fly and it found its mark, spot on. He barely went 30 yards before dropping and expiring right in view of my treestand. After a strenuous solo double drag and field dress, a late night drive to the butcher capped off what could be described as a damn near perfect day. I am so beyond thankfully, especially to my wife (love you babe @jbacc_86 😘) for taking the kids for the afternoon so I could get out. This day tends to conjure up somber feelings and memories of fear, loss, and uncertainty. In 2001 I was an 8th grader just a few miles from NYC and the following year I was a freshman in high school in Manhattan, not all that far from ground zero. It hit close to home, really close. I knew several families directly affected by the attack on the World Trade Center, almost everyone in our sphere of friends did and it was devastating to the community. However, last year September 11th took on a whole new meaning for me and changed my general outlook to one of pure joy, hope & optimism. John Jackson, the 4th O'Neill man to bear that moniker, was born and changed our lives forever. This little guy is my proudest accomplishment and keeps us smiling and laughing nearly non-stop with his chipper and rambunctious attitude. We love you so much Jax, you emanate pure joy and happiness and your beaming smile makes it abundantly clear to anyone who spends 5 minutes with you. There are several places in my life that are very important me. But this right here is truly something I could never EVER live without. Thomas Jefferson once described it as the most beautiful sight he had ever laid eyes upon, and I don't think that's hyperbole at all. This place is a part of my life, my upbringing, my soul. Proposed to my wife here, and now I get to share it with my children, the 4th generation of the O'Neills to enjoy the splendor of this lake. 5 years. WOW! Amazing how something can feel like it happened yesterday and eons ago both at the same time. 2 babies, new job, new house, countless other milestones. The past 5 years has been without a doubt the most amazing period of my life and it all started with this day. It's not always easy, but that's obvious and beyond cliche. Anyone who thinks/says otherwise is delusional. But I know one thing for sure: I am in the midst of the greatest adventure of my life and every single day is FUN, exciting, challenging and immensely rewarding. I love my wife, my family and my life in general beyond measure. I am grateful every single day for who and what God has blessed me with and I always try not to lose sight of that.
