A few frames from behind the scenes on something I’ve been directing and producing…

Some fascinating conversations with leading experts, philosophers and authors on consciousness, AI, privacy, grief and digital identity.

Questions and themes explored in Ghost in the Shell, The Matrix, Blade Runner, Black Mirror and others are starting to feel a lot less fictional 🐇🕳️…

A lot more to explore. taken in London, United Kingdom by @jjsmithfilms

There’s always something slightly surreal about asking for a ticket to your own film at a cinema.

A couple of weeks ago, Lady Lifers: Women Behind Bars screened at @durbaninternationalfilmfest in South Africa.

The film began as a Royal Television Society Award-winning short. Over the last couple of years we’ve gone back to the story, followed it further and developed it into a feature.

At its centre is former soul singer Naomi Blount, who spent decades in a maximum-security prison, using music as part of her fight against mandatory life sentencing, both for herself and for the women she left behind.

One of the best parts of DIFF was finally talking about the film with audiences, and meeting filmmakers whose work I admired or won awards, including @suzannahmirghani (Cotton Queen), @juliajansch (From Dust We Spin) and @mdyr (Hope Is a Word).

Also a nice moment to be included in a photo with Moussa Sène Absa and Azza Elhosseiny.

A long journey from where the film began.

Thank you to the whole DIFF team for the incredible hospitality, and to @britisharts and @bfinetwork for the support.

And a huge thank you to @dan.grixti who made the film with me, and to @aarkangel whose support was instrumental throughout. taken in Durban, South Africa by @jjsmithfilms

Excited to share I’ve been selected for Documentary Campus Masterschool 2026.

I’ll be developing Silicon Soulmates, a documentary exploring grief, memory, and the technology trying to keep our loved ones with us after they’re gone.

DCampus is an international development programme for documentary projects, combining mentoring, workshops and industry pitching.

We’ve already started. The first week was full on.

Lots on editorial positioning, financing, and where documentary is heading across TV, film and digital. But the most valuable part, as always, is story. How close you can get to something real, and how honestly you can tell it.

Really glad to be working with Adam Gee again, alongside Nic Guttridge, Jessica Edwards and the wider team.

Also great to meet filmmakers from across Europe and North America. A sharp, thoughtful group.

Next stop, Munich ✈️

Talking LGBT+: Love, Struggle and Change
A documentary tracing a century of LGBT+ life in Bristol through personal testimony, exploring the love, struggle and change that shaped the city’s LGBT+ community.
Originally made as a digital commission with National Lottery support, the film was later picked up by BBC Points West.
It was a real privilege to meet and interview people from across the community, and to help document stories that too often go unheard. The film reflects not only on progress, but on the resilience, courage and visibility of people whose lives and voices have too often been underserved or overlooked.
Still proud of this one. The brief was huge, and we pulled it off. Screened at the Arnolfini, the Watershed and elsewhere.
