JK5 for Comme des GarçonsThe first handful of looks for Comme des Garçons Homme Plus’ A/W ‘15 show presented tattoo artist Joseph Ari Aloi’s work rather secretively. What began as a series of leg sleeves paired with asymmetrically cut bermuda shorts, spiraling pinstripe suiting, and enveloping headwear, eventually expanded into a fully encompassing set of garments that projected the tattoo artist’s work across the entirety of the body. Aloi’s script tattooing, which took inspiration from Sanskrit and ornamental typefaces, was printed and interfaced onto cinched tailoring, leg and arm sleeves, and graphic t-shirts, leaving the body to appear stretched and distorted - at its most extreme presentations, it was difficult to tell when suiting ended and the body began.Joseph Ari Aloi, Aka JK5, got his work into the hands of Kawakubo through a long game of telephone. JK5 handed his recently published Rizzoli book off to a Japanese client of his who was friends with the brand, who then showed it to Adrian Joffe, Kawakubo’s husband, and from there, a deal was struck. It wasn’t until Paris Fashion Week did JK5 see the outcome of the collaboration. During a guest lecture at RISD, he and the class watched through the screen as his work came down the runway, where 37 of the 40 looks contained his art.Following the show, JK5 and CDG would go on to collaborate again through an installation in Dover Street Market’s NYC store. Together, JK5 and the DSM NY team designed a space on the 4th floor of the department store, featuring custom CDG wallets, sneakers, and perfume boxes alongside his book and artworks. “Old Fishermen Never Die, They Just Smell That Way”(Drawing For The Summer of 2025) Pencil, Pen & Ink On Tracing Paper 12” x 9” slide for details.This drawing started as a list, as they often do. A way of cataloging inspiration, current events, road trips, projects, and collaborators of the moment in this case. That list becomes a wildly organic, and associative way of organizing my thoughts, and thoroughly immersing myself in the stream of conscious, physical act of the drawing process, which is always exercise, and at the core of my steadfast practice. It began with how much i love graffiti, and the mind blowing use of mountain climbing equipment and repelling style creating huge scale, vertical pieces exploding all over Brooklyn at the time from artists i love such as Zoot, Notice, Camel, EXR, Zwon, and others.i did my thing with the 5 boroughs, blending & extending word endings, loving the Knicks run, and just paying homage to New York City: A pencil rat with basketball ears and a cheese tattoo emerged and multiplied in various ways, including letterforms upon closest study. I was hard at work on my forthcoming, beast of a Star Wars book with my old homie @dbburkeman @blurringbooksnyc 👀🙏🏼 His book, “Crash Bang” just came out, as did The “Smile” book, so that all got a treatment. Special shout out to my brother @raouls and @thatgorillabrand_ who i was working with on a t shirt series, @oreenyc with whom i did a variant cover for their magazine Small Hours, @oldmanalan and my old friend @_brody_baker_ who ive been nurturing a larger world with since 2007. Oh, and my kids and i were listening to a lot of Kendrick Lamar, Doecchi, & Glorilla last summer. 👀🤓👀The title comes from a hand painted sign in our beloved, annual, summer lobster and clam spot Shaws in New Harbor, Maine; a 5 minute walk from my birth mothers house called the Nellie Moon. that sign is in the lower, right hand corner, and signs are everywhere. “My Poppa Paisano, Ay!” Graphite and colored pencil 2008. This Yoda-fied portrait of my father Ernesto Aloi as a young child in the 1940’s, was for a show at that time.I did my best with the adjustments, but its an old iphone pic, my apologies. There are patterns and subliminally encrypted design and character elements from star wars in his period garb… Some form of Cylon Raider is his left shoulder, and a shame its so blurry, but the left point of his lapel has juuust awakened and is morphing into a snake, a homage to james earl jones, as thulsa doom, in the classic, original conan the barbarian film… also, the yoda action figure that i loved so much came with 2 different color ways of the snake around his neck, soooooThe kickstarter full launch for THE EMPIRE STRIKESB👀K is so close, that it looks way too big to be a space station, and you can taste it like blue milk. 50 years of Star Wars Drawings: 509 pages… A homage for the ages in chronological stages. In 2003, The man with the master plan, and OG brother @tonyarcabascio curated a sick project where selected artists were assigned classic album covers to fuck with. I got this CREAM album, and did my damn thang. i was so stoked to be involved in what became a 2 part book series called HEAVY. Record, Vinyl, LP dimensions, to boot.
