Jonathan Kay is competing in the KPL🤫

Jonathan has been playing kendama for almost 14 years and is coming in from Houston, Texas.

Jonathan is a competitive beast. He has had a lot of success in taking down some of your favorite pros and achieving Top 8 or above in several pro competitions over the years - most recently at the 2024 Las Vegas Kendama Open, where he placed in the Pro Top 8.

Jonathan has laid a bit low with dama during the past year, but is getting back into competing full force with the KPL this season.

We’re looking forward to seeing the damage he can do.

Four Corners Tré. I want to share with you why I failed this trick thousands of times.

This has been a dream trick I’ve had for years, & today it happened.

I’ve been grinding each of the elements of this trick for months. But what kept me going wasn’t to land this trick and to post it on instagram for likes and then to be forgotten in an hour. I am careful to try not to fall into the trap of only playing for the post, because it can kill my love for kendama.

I kept going to truly learn the trick. I love stalls & tré flips in kendama and I kept going to genuinely learn the trick, not to land it.

This has been my motto for this trick and others I am working on. “Play to learn, not to land.”

This mindset has helped me love the process of missing thousands upon thousands of tré flips. I have missed so many it’s crazy. But I fell in love with kendama to learn tricks I think are beautiful, and to be able to land them at will.

Stall tré flips are extremely technical and very difficult to adjust as it can be hard to know what you’re doing wrong. The learning curve on these tricks are steep, but that’s what makes being able to land them so satisfying. Failing so many times over willingly, for the vision of being able to have success eventually is was drives me as a human in my life & kendama.

This trick taught me a lot, thanks for reading this & I hope you found this helpful 🤙🏻❤️.

I challenge you to go learn a trick you think is beautiful
