Today, early Mother’s Day morning, I got up and went to the pool. I’m training to do my first sprint Triathalon in August. I was feeling good and decided to push myself. As I passed 500 yards, I was feeling tired, but I kept going. I ended up swimming a half mile straight through for the first time. The exact distance I will need to swim on race day.

Frequently over the past months of taking swim classes to learn a proper stroke and training, I’ve thought of my mother. A working class Black mom of five, she was in college pursuing her degree when I was born (she graduated when I was nine). One of many things she learned was about Black children’s higher mortality from not being able to swim. She was determined that her five kids would not be statistics. Every summer for the better part of a decade, she signed us up for swim lessons. We’d spend weeks of the summer going to the classes. And then she had to figure out what to do with four little black girls’ hair. God bless her cause that is a lot of detangling. Now that I’m older and realize how much kids’ camps cost, I’m even more impressed with her rigor around us all learning water safety and swim basics. There were two times later in my life where I would have surely drowned if it wasn’t for those lessons.

Not only did she teach us how to swim in literal water, my mom showed through her example persistence, riding the high and lows of life and never giving up. I’m deeply grateful for all the ways my Mom Cheryl Knox (Coach Knox to many) poured into us, ensuring we had more opportunities than she did. Thanks mom for laying the foundation. I love you. ❤️

And shout out to my sisters @_queencandace & Zina, two of the best mom’s I know.

My birthday this year reached me in Chamonix, France. I went to a spa last night, skied with friends today, and I’m presently on a train through the stunning Alps headed to Zermatt. 2026 has already been a blessing for my personal life. We’ve been traveling since December, meeting family and friends in Congo 🇨🇩, Belgium🇧🇪, Switzerland🇨🇭, France 🇫🇷 and England 🇬🇧 so far. We’ll visit a couple more countries before we head back to the USA in a month. 2026 holds a lot of uncertainty on a lot of levels. I pray that love and justice prevails over all that tries to stand in their way, for resilience (personally and collectively), and that the Lord continues to hold and bless me and my family beyond our wildest dreams. I’m starting this year feeling whole and deeply grateful 🙏🏾 Thanks for all the well wishes sent my way, I’m feeling all the love 🥰 taken in Chamonix Mont Blanc (French Alps) by @jknoxuout
