Happy 313 Day!!! Feeling very honored to share the shirt I did for the DETail Design Capsule with @detroitpistons

I sketched a lot for this one so I thought it’d be cool to share some of my ideation process. Doing a project like this comes with a lot of concept indecision…it could go so many directions, so many styles, how do you pick one?

I knew I wanted to display recognizable Detroit imagery to celebrate our roots, but I wanted to bundle them all in a way that makes sense. I thought maybe show a childhood hoop dream type scene, trophies on the dresser, music thru the speaker, basketball, sun shining out the window…I thought maybe display them in like a work tackle box, or on a court at the park..ultimately I decided a bouquet was perfect both symbolically and aesthetically.

Trying not to get too long winded but this one means a lot. There’s a bunch of cool Easter Eggs in the design, it’d take a whole other post to describe em all 😅❤️

Very excited to share this wall I finished recently at Los Galanes down here in Southwest. This is my second biggest wall to date, and it was definitely a grind. Ended up taking a bit longer than expected due to a number of circumstances, but with it being on the corner of Vernor & 75 I wanted to make sure it was a perfect “welcome” type of mural.

The general direction from the client was to do a skeleton couple in some type of bright nature setting, and to include both bridges and the river. I thought it would be cool to portray them as if they rode a bike down to the riverside park and laid out a blanket to watch the sunset.

I also wanted to include a border inspired by traditional stone carvings, it felt weird to go all the way to the edge of the wall with the main design, and it felt weird to just leave the border a flat color. I think the design I worked up was a sweet solution, and honestly probably my favorite part of the wall. It was super fun playing with those values and geometry to create the illusion of depth in the “carving”

It’s hard to really convey how awesome, friendly, welcoming, amazing, etc etc the whole staff and general community is around Los Galanes. Thank you to everyone that made this project an enjoyable and very memorable experience. And thanks always to @mwkopicki for his help with the lettering, and @bornchampion23_brand for helping block in the border.

I like to use the collective “we” when I talk about murals because it quite literally is never just my undertaking. In past years my brother @mwboyboy was next to me every step, spray, roll of the way. We developed our own process and method of conducting a mural project, and now that he’s off following his calling I just stick to the recipe we created.

As a mural community we hire each other out when jobs come up, I can’t even name all the people and job sites over the years. There’s always more hands in the pot than whoever signs the wall. And over the years and projects I’ve been fortunate to work with some of the best artists in the world, and I learned a lot from each one of them. This project allowed me to test some of those methods & techniques I watched the masters do time & time again.

Having the right person by your side makes all the difference, and @al.ill is with me every step of the way. From picking color palettes, to working on the design, to sharing a meal after a long day. It’s crazy to think how difficult any of this would be without our support systems.

With that being said..we spent over 300 hours watching paint dry last month,and we had some break throughs. I feel so grateful to have even been approached about this wall. It came about thru networking, specifically a network of beautiful, talented, creative, free spirited, lovely people in Detroit MI. @kellyrollgolden reached out and put me in touch with @johnnyulaj and the rest just fell into place.

I didn’t wanna spend this caption talking about process or materials, we have a video coming soon that’ll highlight everything start to finish. Rather, I wanted to say thank you. Thank you to everyone that I’ve ever worked with, for, or along side. Thank you to the staff at Polonia, some of the kindest people you’ll ever meet, they kept me fed and sane all month, I feel like I made some new friends over there.

Thank you to the Hamtramck community and the Polonia customers, the countless meaningful conversations, thoughts, stories, laughs, and memories. Hope everyone’s having a great summer so far 😎 it’s been non stop action and fun projects so I figured it’s time to post some. This project with @brooklynoutdoor for @seadoo was a cool full circle moment back in May. As soon as I saw the design I knew it was @jesse_kassel ‘s work. Was really cool and an honor to paint one of his designs as he helped me get my foot in the door down here and has always looked out over the past couple years 🙌🤝 the use of color and shapes was nothing short of amazing as always. This one is down at the usual 2000 Michigan Ave location in Corktown. Paint supplied by @thecolorblocdetroit as always.
