![[YAPPING INCOMING]
Not the usual post from me today, but I just really wanted to share this. This past Friday afternoon I attended an art exhibit by Safwat Saleem, titled “The Unrequited Love Institute”. Conceptually, this exhibit introduces the viewer to a dystopian society that while fictional, it never felt that far fetched.
Throughout the exhibit there is lots of imagery, sound, and video footage that immerses you into this world that Saleem creates. In this “institute”. You are essentially prepping to be integrated into this society, by giving up your crazy ideas about what you believe to be unjust. “Where are you really from?” Not a micro aggression, it’s a fun conversation starter! “I love African food.” The valid response is “I love it too!”. The posters you see and the videos that appear as you walk around truly gives you a very blunt look into this other reality, one that pretty much demonizes your individuality and culture.
When I watch movies and tv shows about grim dystopian futures, I often think “dang that’s crazy, low key too crazy to happen irl though”. But truly, it’s not that far off, and this exhibit I think really hits home representing that. In this presented world we’re shown this institution, but in our day to day lives we’re presented with the same concept. Having to code-switch, having to deal with micro-aggressions from a co-worker or fellow student, having to sit there and tell yourself “it’s okay, it’s not that deep” “let it go”. In a way, the institute resides in each of our minds.
The messages conveyed through the posters, books, and other pieces I found to be incredibly creative, and if you ever get a chance to check out this exhibit, I would recommend it 10000%. I of course cant put my entire thoughts in here because this is Instagram, but I hope I was making some sense lol. If you made it to the end of this thank you for reading, and I’d love to talk about it with anyone who has seen the exhibit or just is in any way interested in it. by @jkt_the_sequel](https://s6.imginn.com/617554244_18117270637598398_4940933872349218616_n.jpg?t51.82787-15/617554244_18117270637598398_4940933872349218616_n.jpg?stp=dst-jpg_e35_p1290x1290_tt6&_nc_cat=110&ig_cache_key=MzgxMTk1ODM5NDYzMTQ3NTgwOA%3D%3D.3-ccb7-5&ccb=7-5&_nc_sid=58cdad&efg=eyJ2ZW5jb2RlX3RhZyI6IkNBUk9VU0VMX0lURU0ueHBpZHMuMTQ0MC5zZHIucmVndWxhcl9waG90by5DMyJ9&_nc_ohc=pXoHG952my0Q7kNvwEmupg6&_nc_oc=Adpfch3c2JWSpP8w46oubX1MlXsydSIDlUhbg3D183ELP8TezVjAYKJVEJZIpFCkRcPP6OdVrMms9eGibYblw98t&_nc_ad=z-m&_nc_cid=0&_nc_zt=23&_nc_ht=scontent-ord5-2.cdninstagram.com&_nc_gid=0q9VBRYOjT0glDE3HSZebA&_nc_ss=7a22e&oh=00_AQMhcuX4giEPjSfUq8Sd1OEdEIJBK0XxDkoJ2Sr9Q8GOuw&oe=6AD8CF1A)
