This is what a jig sounds like after you’ve eaten a rotisserie chicken with bare hands.

“Dusty Windowsill” - I picked this one up from @seansutor a while back.

the most beautiful things about you
are your imperfections,
your unique ways,
 your look,
your scars,
the personality in your expression,
the life experience shining through your work,
the way you transmute your pain, joy, love, and loss:
using those to create something beautiful.
if it’s flawed, it’s real.
and that is why
it’s so beautiful.

Often heard at our monthly trad session @nashwell.cafe, which is tomorrow! Friday, March 13th, 6-8 pm.

This tune is called The Silver Spear - a well-loved reel that’s played in sessions across the world. Many friends have been made over this tune and ones like it!

We have a light group tomorrow… hope to see some new faces, people who might want to join in. Even just for a tune or two. All are welcome!

Slow Groove … I love the harmonic color of modal music.
Hinting at chords through melody, walking bass, counterpoint. Sparse voicings… room to breathe. What a neverending playground.

I’ve returned to this tune many times from different perspectives. Harmonically, this time. I learned things about it I’d never noticed before. A lot of things.

You may listen and think it sounds insane. Again, the beauty of modal music.

The melody was written by Bobby Casey, who I guess was raised on a farm in County Clare. He emigrated to London for work in his 20s. He worked in construction, as far as I can tell.

His music was beyond description. It was from his soul.

Bobby’s story reminds me of a few people I’ve met in Clare.

There’s something about that place.

To a friend whose simple act of kindness made a huge difference for me last night. Thank you, buddy.

This tune is called “Ormond Sound,” composed by the legendary fiddle and accordion player Paddy O’Brien. I always assumed the title referred to a body of water, like the Puget Sound.

Today I found out O’Brien led the Ormond Ceili Band, and Ormond is a region in Tipperary. So I guess he was saying, “This is what we sound like over here.”
