The Battle Cry of Freedom Ca. July 1862
Composed by George F. Root

The original abilitionist and pro union lyrics were written in response to a call to arms by Lincoln due to dwindling numbers in the union army. The song became so popular that later, the confederacy coopted it with their own spin.

This caused multiple recorded instances where lost soldiers on opposing sides would hear the tune being played by military musicians in the distance, walk towards it seeking refuge only to find enemy soldiers and a swift end from their weapons..

This tune was also prominently featured in Ken Burns’ documentary The Civil War (1990).
