Jack Whitten The Numinous @hauserwirthlosangeles “Following the late artist’s critically acclaimed 2025 retrospective at The Museum of Modern Art, New York, @hauserwirthlosangeles presents The Numinous,’ an exhibition of Jack Whitten’s paintings and works on paper from the 1980s. The exhibition focuses on a pivotal and still under-examined period in Whitten’s six-decade career, where technical innovation and spiritual inquiry came together with new force. “ taken in Hauser & Wirth Los Angeles by @jmjlaca

GLENN LIGON
SIT SO YOUR BACK ISN’T AGAINST THE DOOR @hauserwirthlosangeles “On view together for the first time in 25 years, ‘Sit So Your Back Isn’t Against The Door’ reunites the largest group of Glenn Ligon’s Coloring Book paintings since their debut at the Walker Art Center in Minneapolis.

Conceived during the artist’s 1999 – 2000 residency at the museum, the celebrated series draws on Afrocentric coloring books of the late 1960s and early 1970s. While at the Walker, Ligon invited local schoolchildren to color pages from these vintage publications, then reinterpreted their creations in his own hand on large-scale canvases. The resulting paintings—colorful, uninhibited, deceptively loose—offer a striking departure from the monochromatic, text-based work for which Ligon is best known.“ taken in Hauser & Wirth Los Angeles by @jmjlaca

Long considered the sculptor most closely associated with abstract expressionism, David Smith (1906 – 1965) was in fact a restless polymath for whom sculpture, drawing and painting formed a single creative current - sculpting by day and working on canvas and paper by night. Night Window. David Smith Spray Paintings, 1958 – 1964,’ an exhibition devoted to his pioneering Sprays, seldom-seen two-dimensional works that embody the artist’s gift for daring, even startling innovations of form and color, space and time, in every medium he chose. @hauserwirth taken in Hauser & Wirth by @jmjlaca

“Summoning Cleo, an exhibition of new work by Mia Middleton at Robert’s Projects. Combining intimate, intensely concentrated paintings with works made at a new and expanded scale, Middleton uses a shifting palette of theatrical reds and archival greys to articulate two thematic registers: the vitality of life and the systems that contain it. The paintings sustain the tension between these forces, allowing a quiet transmutation to emerge. In doing so, Summoning Cleo pushes the narrative structure to its limits, revealing how meaning persists even as coherence begins to fracture. Middleton’s visual language of cropped perspectives, isolated objects and suspended gestures draws on late-19th-century theatrical imagery and the early language of photography, often through anonymous vintage photographs discovered in markets, whose obscurity endures even through their reframing. Inspired by a pre-modern sensibility of embodied presence before the camera, Middleton’s compositions coalesce into an uncanny, almost dystopian play where context remains mysterious, and each figure seems both fixed in a moment and able to transcend time. By keeping figures anonymous and details fragmented, Middleton constructs phantasmagoric scenes that normalize distortion and ambiguity in place of logic and rationality.“ taken in Roberts Projects by @jmjlaca

“A Halloween Carol created by Lawrence Meyers reimagines Dickens’ ghost story as an immersive journey through memory, identity, and Halloween itself.
This Halloween, Jacob Marley rattles his chains again, but this time, Ebenezer Scrooge has nothing to do with it.

The Ghosts are here for you.

A Halloween Carol is an intimate, interactive theatrical adventure inspired by A Christmas Carol and the deliciously strange Halloweens of childhood. Hidden within The Count’s Den in DTLA, a succession of living worlds awaits, inhabited by ghosts, oddballs, lost souls, and things for which there is no particularly good explanation.“ 📷 Photos courtesy of @a_halloween_carol @thecountsden 🎃 taken in The Count’s Den by @jmjlaca

“Control X, an exhibition of new paintings and video animations by Tala Madani features several new bodies of paintings and new animations in which characters and settings subject themselves, willingly or not, to forces by which they are broken down and reformed. The works address mythologies of creation as they trace the fine lines between making and destroying in art, language, history, and human relationships. By foregrounding acts of markmaking, the exhibition establishes emotionally resonant parallels between the worlds the figures inhabit and the materially present world of painting itself. The result is a form of realism that goes beyond artifice, and that allows the work to address the widest possible range of historical, art historical, and contemporary crises with both humor and critique.” @davidkordanskygallery @talamadani #talamadani taken in David Kordansky Gallery by @jmjlaca

“David Lynch: LA - places five of Lynch’s photographic series together in dialogue for the first time, spotlighting his distinctive artistic sensibility in a medium that bridges his significant contributions to painting and film. For more than fifty years, David Lynch (1946–2025) called Los Angeles home. He arrived in the night in 1972 and awoke to the scent of jasmine and the Southern California light. The city went on to become his inspiration and the locus of his most creative work. David Lynch: LA highlights Lynch’s photo-based works within the myth and mystery of Los Angeles and its emotional landscape. In these images, Lynch holds close to the dream of the city and its archetypes: the ingenue, the shapeshifter, the beauty and darkness. For Lynch, the city’s defining characteristics are atmospheric—physically and psychologically. It is a feeling as much as it is a place.” taken in Pace Gallery by @jmjlaca

Olympia, a solo exhibition of work by Paul Pfeiffer.
“Pfeiffer has long been attuned to the architecture of viewing and how structures such as sports stadiums overtly direct a very particular kind of embodied sight. In the wake of his acclaimed 2023–24 survey at the Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles, the artist returns to LA as the city prepares for the upcoming 2028 Summer Olympics. In his new exhibition Olympia at Perrotin Los Angeles, Pfeiffer has expanded the idea behind his 2008 sculptural work Vitruvian Figure, a large-scale maquette of a phantasmatic 1,000,000 seat stadium, by proposing a similar exponential blow up of an iconic local sports venue: the L.A. Memorial Coliseum, built in 1923. The resulting project, Vitruvian Figure (Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum), seen here in a series of architectural renderings, explores the way in which architecture embodies the spectacle as well as the way that our bodies inhabit that built environment. The L.A. Memorial Coliseum was explicitly modeled after the original Roman Colosseum built by the Flavian dynasty between 70 and 80 AD and even features a block of granite from the original structure that was gifted by the Italian government to Los Angeles in 1949. As a site of social entertainment, the Roman Colosseum was a structure that directed visitors’ sight to its stadium floor which hosted free public games and spectacular gladiator exhibitions, exotic animal hunts, and theatrical recreations of great battles. All of this was provided for a viewing public that was hierarchically divided architecturally by social class. In many ways we can think of the Roman Colosseum as the birthplace of the society of the spectacle and the ancestor of the rapidly evolving digital attention economy that we now inhabit.” taken in Perrotin by @jmjlaca
