NY Philharmonic bassist Rion Wentworth recording at JML Studios Sept 2026 was a super fun session because of the 20+ mics we tried to achieve the ultimate fidelity, our favorite was a 1967 AKG C24 (big surprise). We also adored the pairing of a 1974 Neumann KM68 + RCA 44 Alnico version. Close runner up was surprisingly, a Nuemann M582! What a gem on strings that mic is. The Beyer M160 also shined as did the Gefell Mv692 but in the end, nothing can touch my C24. I love access to tools just like blacksmiths and carpenters have for thousands of years. However, generative audio tools flatten dynamic range, homogenize tonal balance, blacklist producers, bypass critical listening and acoustics knowledge, make our kids tech-dependent, and removes intentionality that real engineers bring to music production. What’s worse is streaming platforms are AI watermarking and flagging any music that used ANY AI at all! Let’s talk about it. by @jmlrecordingstudios

I figured you guys would get a kick out of this photo I just found: when David Gulick (prop master) of the Bruce Springstien biopic "Deliver Me From Nowhere" asked me to bring in the rig Bruce & and Mike Batlan would've used in his Colt's Neck bedroom to record the Nebraska demo, this is what I brought. A Teac 144 four track recorder, sm57's, a 1970's Maestro Echoplex EP-1, and the iconic Panasonic boom box Bruce used to record the whole demo, which ended up being the actual commercial release. He famously carried the demo cassette around in his pocket for months and his boombox was found underwater and played back at a slower speed due to damage, all of which is what you hear on the LP. I still have my rendition of Nebraska I tracked live and demonstrated for the director & crew that day with a Gibson J200, harmonica neck brace and a shaker strapped to my ankle, just like I use to busk in subways haha. What a fun job that one was! I got that gig from working the Bob Dylan biopic and this one got me Marty Supreme. I am starting on Miami Vice next week & just spent the day last week training Daniel Radcliff how to use some pretty obscure audio equipment from the 60's! I'm so grateful for all these incredible films... who knows what's next! I just assisted Martin Scorsese's sound team on set at Steiner Studios in Brooklyn on "What Happens At Night", fixing some audio issues for a scene with Jennifer Lawrence & Leonardo DiCaprio using some VERY cool mics I own (Beyer M140, Neumann KM84's, Reslo RBT and Altec Birdcage) which led to Sound Production magazine listing me as the East Coast Resource for Functional, Period-Correct microphones!

A huge thanks to Tod & Terrance Maitland for the plug as well, hopefully this mention will translate to more work with these amazing creatives. This is my third time in this publication and sixth publication this year regarding my work as Audio Tech Specialist this year.

I really hope this new career pivot keeps up, as AI seemingly dissolves so much of the visual design work I've relied on for the last three decades. I have some other production irons in the fire this summer and can't wait to share them as they unfold. Thanks to those who have shown me love and support on this new path I've been on for the last couple years.
