Myth: "I missed the one-year deadline, so asylum is off the table for me."
Not necessarily. Two exceptions — changed circumstances and extraordinary circumstances — can excuse a late filing. And withholding of removal and CAT protection aren't subject to the one-year rule at all.

Affirmative vs. defensive asylum — what's the difference?
Affirmative: you apply on your own with USCIS and attend a non-adversarial interview. Defensive: you request asylum as a defense in immigration court after removal proceedings begin. Same legal standard — very different setting, evidence, and strategy.

Asylum has a clock — and most people only get one year.
