Today I began a journey into mosaic making, something I have thought about for many years. So I came to Ravenna, known for their collection of Renaissance mosaics, to learn the techniques of the masters. taken in Ravenna, Italy by @jmrizzi

There’s something I love about an old urban wall—the way time leaves its fingerprints on it.

Layers of paint, faded signs, graffiti, repairs, scratches and remnants of things that once occupied the space. Nothing is completely erased. Everything becomes part of what comes next.

Fun fact - We discovered through our studio visit that while we both lived in NYC in the 90s we lived right around the corner from each other on the LES. He was on Ludlow and I lived on Allen. We both went to the same Ludlow Bar and we both recalled that it had a purple felt pool table. 😂 Talk about a very small world!

Rizzi most recently celebrated limited-run collections with Infinite Objects and Detroit-based 1xRun.

RUBBLE ART
—
Earlier this year I began to collect pieces of cinderblock and stone a nearby collapsed cement factory. The interior had been painted by various graffiti artists and the walls now lay in piles of rubble, baking in the hot sun over years. I took multiple trips, filling 5 gallon buckets and bringing the pieces back to the studio to collaborate on. The result is a new series titled Rubble Art. A continuation of the Order and Collapse conversation. taken in Dallas, Texas by @jmrizzi
