A Memorial project completed by upper grade students to honor 911 victims. It was really quite impressive to see the amount of work and detail put into these projects. by @jmrupp

Abigail was so honored to receive the Andy Avilas award!!

The Andy Aviles Award is given to a 5th grade Lanier student who exemplifies leadership, compassion, empathy, strength, and vision. Someone who works hard to be the best they can be for themselves and those around them. Someone who knows that giving is more important than receiving and who believes that they can be the change they want to see in the world.

Andy Aviles was a student at Lanier, Monroe, and graduated from Robinson High. He was an outstanding student who was involved in many activities at each school he attended. Not only was Andy an outstanding student he was a leader. Before he graduated from Robinson, he was senior class president, a cheerleader, and a member of the wrestling team. As a National Honor Society member, he graduated third in his class and earned a full academic scholarship to Florida State University, where he planned to study. Andy put off college because he felt he had a strong moral obligation to serve his country, so he joined the Marine Corps Reserves before his senior year in high school. As he was preparing to be a freshman at FSU he was called to duty. Andy became a part of the 4th Assault Amphibian Battalion, 4th Marine Division. Andy was now Lance Corporal Andrew Julian Aviles.
On April 7th, 2003, Andy’s team was a part of the siege on Baghdad. Unfortunately, Andy lost his life that day. Fighting to protect the lives of other.
In honoring Andy’s memory, Lanier Elementary established the Andy Aviles award in 2003. by @jmrupp
