遊玄のいざない 群馬県鬼石多目的ホールで行われた「遊玄のいざない」　というイベントの音楽監督をやりました。 カリフォルニアから来られたケン上野さん、京都から来てくださったアキライケダさん、古神道と雅楽と神楽のミックスされたオリジナルユニットの「笑み魂」NickLuscombe、JamesGreer、Yumiko Moriokaのmusic for Rest Rooms, 全く違う個性の4組のライブ演奏が、密林東京さんのデザインによる幻想的に生まれ変わった多目的ホールのステージで10／12スポーツの日に行われました。 今回私は、日本的な笑み魂と、全く違うアンビアントの2つの演奏に両方参加して、頭の切り替えが大変でしたが、無事になんとか終わる事ができてホッとしています。 皆さん本当にありがとうございました。 翌日は、すぐにまた全然違うx64のレコーディングに入り、音楽三昧しています。そして、今月は、この芸術祭があった為、チョコレートの製作が遅れたので、明日からは直ぐにチョコレートのお仕事に突入です。 歳と共に、ますます忙しくなる😓 #鬼石芸術祭　#遊玄のいざない　#鬼石多目的ホール #musicforrestrooms #ambiantmusic by @jms__grr_

You can stream online or listen on 104.4FM in London. “In Search of the Singing Sand” A 30 minute travelogue documenting my and James Greer’s road trip along the Sea of Japan coastline, in search of the feted “Singing Sand”, or “Crying Sand” 鳴き砂. A subtle and fickle sonic phenomenon that arises from unusually high quartz levels. Whilst not unique to Japan, it is unusual within Japan. We make many missteps, muck about a fair bit, and encounter lots of other glorious things along the way (windy dunes, fields of spring onions, deers, bears, cave spirits, and friendly locals). It is, I claim, a pleasant and sweet half hour. In July we brought our Sonic Minds project, developed in partnership with Wonderfruit festival, to Europe, with a series of live performances, talks, and playback events. Starting with a listening and talk event at Spiritland in London focused on Japanese ambient music, we then gave a well received European premiere of Music for Rest Rooms to a full house at Royal Albert Hall’s Elgar Room, accompanied with visuals from Hiraki Sawa @sawaraki and two days later again performed it in the incredible architecture of Brighton’s oldest building - Saint Nicholas’ Church - which resonated and responded to the music to give an incredible sense of space and scale. We also performed selections from Yumiko’s landmark 1987 album Resonance, live in Europe for the first time. A talk at Japan House London shared our live video of Music for Restrooms at Wonderfruit’s immersive Enfold stage – and explored Yumiko Morioka’s life in music and amazing stories of life as a musician hanging out with YMO in the bubble era, creating a now-legendary but at the time overlooked ambient album, and her eventual return to ambient music, remembered through her self deprecating and humble sense of humour made for a really special evening. KEF Music Gallery in central London’s listening room celebrated Music for Rest Rooms with a discussion on the process of making the piece, and intimate playback via their immersive system and high fidelity speakers. Then, we were able to share the music in Berlin’s Reethaus - a stunning purpose-built listening experience room, with a specially-spatialised mix supported by @monomstudios , presented all-day long to a sell-out audience of nearly 600 people. Many thanks to everyone who supported us, attended the events, and listened to our music. Something deep and tranquil is coming to Spiritland, a very special night of music and talk. Kankyō London is a new festival celebrating ambient and environmental music, and Spiritland hosts the very first event on 13th July — an evening of playback, conversation and live performance. The night centres on Yumiko Morioka, composer of the landmark 1987 album Resonance, recently reissued by METRON, who is in London to perform at the Royal Albert Hall on the 14th July. Yumiko joins us at Spiritland to talk about the making of Resonance, the world of Japanese ambient music, and her new collaboration with MSCTY Studio - Music For Restrooms - part of a series of music productions created for Sonic Minds, a new music project developed for Wonderfruit festival. Selected tracks from Resonance and the Sonic Minds project will be played back on Spiritland’s world-class sound system throughout the evening. Friend of Spiritland Nick Luscombe (MSCTY) will perform an ambient DJ set along with collaborator James Greer, and Thai artist NOTEP brings an ambient live/DJ hybrid performance to close the night. It was about a year ago we started to work on Music for Rest Rooms, a part of the Sonic Minds project created by @mscty_official and @wonderfruit Reimagining of the concept of a rest room from the American English of a place to do the toilet, to something more like a designated space for mental and physical rest, as a reaction to the city’s private meeting booths and rental by the hour offices. The music comes from a sonic re-realization of memories we shared of explorations in the forests, at lakesides, riverbanks and of foggy, conch blowing encounters on hilltops, down the rice grove valleys of a peaceful place where Yumiko Morioka has resettled herself away from the Tokyo noise. Each of the 5 moments links taste, scent, sound, and memory of those places and times. Every time we play it is a joyous new response to those things and the space we are in. Installed for a moment of calm in the toilets at Wonderfruit in 2025, the music will soon be available to listen elsewhere too. We’re not entirely sure how to describe it, but it’s made without following the ingredients list of a standard recipe and sits somewhere in the space alongside you, without dominating it. We’ll also be giving the European premiere of music from Yumiko’s 1987 album Resonance, a landmark of 1980s kankyo ongaku more indebted to Satie and Brian Eno in sound and spirit, than to the synth-heavy goings on that a lot of that wonderful era conjures.
