As we conclude the Virginia American Revolution 250 Commemoration events, join the Madison Center for Civic Engagement for a roundtable that asks us to consider the stories we tell about the First Peoples of western Virginia, their roles in the Backcountry, and their resilience today. The Great Valley Road (Route 11), the Native American route that runs through JMU’s campus, is the anchor for the discussion. Generations of students went out from here to teach Virginia history at a time when Native Americans were viewed as a people of the past. The roundtable will grow our understandings of connections between past and present by building a more inclusive dialogue.

🗓️Friday, October 16, 4-5:30 p.m., with reception to follow

🌎Location: Memorial Hall Auditorium

🚙All are welcome; Memorial Hall parking lots require no parking pass

How do you get children excited about reading? According to Dr. Pamela Sullivan, you start with what they love. As co-author of the Learning Science Through Sports series, Sullivan combined her expertise in literacy and nonfiction text design to help young readers explore horses, science, and lifelong learning through an engaging, interest-driven approach.

The Virginia Instructional Coach Collaborative (VAICC) and Virginia Assistant Principal Institute (VAAPI) came together for our first in-person professional learning event to kick off the 2026–27 school year.

Bringing instructional coaches and assistant principals together, this collaborative learning experience provided opportunities to learn, reflect, and strengthen partnerships focused on school-based instructional leadership.

Through shared learning and collaboration, participants explored how strong coach-administrator partnerships can support inclusive instruction, educator development, and continuous improvement in schools across the Commonwealth.

Together, VAICC and VAAPI are investing in Virginia’s leadership pipeline and building the capacity of educators to lead meaningful change, and creating the conditions for every student to thrive.

Welcome back to Faculty Friday! 🎉

REDI is proud to recognize Dr. Dannette "Dani" Murray, Academic Unit Head in the Department of Educational Foundations & Exceptionalities in JMU's College of Education.

Dr. Murray's work focuses on breaking down barriers in educator preparation and creating innovative pathways that address workforce needs while expanding access to the teaching profession. She currently serves as project manager for a Grow Your Own initiative that supports provisionally licensed teachers through asynchronous learning modules and partnerships with school divisions across Virginia.

When asked about her scholarly journey, Dani shared, “A central focus of my scholarly work has been securing and managing external funding to advance special education practice and teacher preparation. Among the initiatives of which I am most proud is Project SPEED (Supporting Provisional Exceptional Educators Development), which provided tuition support and preparation pathways for provisionally licensed special education teachers in response to long-standing workforce shortages across the Commonwealth. Building on the success of Project SPEED, I led a collaborative effort with Albemarle County Public Schools and Fairfax County Public Schools to develop a $924,899 Grow Your Own Registered Apprenticeship Program proposal, which, although not funded, established a framework for future submissions. More recently, I helped lead the submission of a $1,140,914 U.S. Department of Education Personnel Preparation grant to further strengthen the early childhood special education workforce pipeline.” 📚
