What can you plant in your garden if you live in a Mediterranean climate? 🌿
Here's a palette built for real autumn color in a dry-summer climate, not a northern-European one borrowed and hoping for the best.
Save this for your autumn planting list.

Team Spartina — restoring a delta for the next 120 years.

Earlier this year, I joined a team from the University of Padova for the NBF Student Challenge, hosted by Wageningen University (WUR) in the Netherlands. The brief: the Mississippi Delta's Barataria-Terrebonne basin, losing ground to saltwater intrusion and a river cut off from its floodplain.

Our answer wasn't one fix — it was a full system. Sediment diversions, mangrove restoration, reforested levees, silvo-aquaculture, and managed retreat, all designed around successional reforestation and a 120-year timeline. Restoration that includes the communities and livelihoods already there, not just the hydrology.

My focus: rendering, plant and vegetation selection by salinity zone, infrastructure input, video scripts and filming, and GIS support.

We were selected among the top 10 finalist teams and presented in the Netherlands.

Raking your leaves kills more than it cleans.

You spend hours raking every autumn, bag it all, throw it away — then buy compost. The leaves were already the compost. Left in place, they feed mycorrhizal fungi, shelter overwintering pupae and solitary bees, and rebuild your soil for free.

Leave a full layer under trees and in beds, a light layer on lawns, clear just the paths. Nature wrote the original mulch recipe — we just forgot to read it.

Save this before your next autumn cleanup 🌿

Your garden is a stepping stone. Without it, pollinators die.

Bees and butterflies don't live in one garden — they migrate across networks. Every fenced yard with no flowers is a broken bridge in that chain.

Ten or more nectar species, continuous bloom from March through October, a water source, and shelter for solitary bees. Skip the double-flowered cultivars — they look full but offer no nectar at all.

Save this and plant 3 new natives this season 🌿

One neighbor can plant 10 trees. Ten neighbors can plant a forest.

You're waiting on the municipality to green your street. Meanwhile, you own the sidewalk in front of your house. If every household on a 20-house street plants 3 native trees, that's 60 new trees in one season — no government program required.

The trick is the watering pact: trees fail in year one or two from neglect, not bad planting. Take turns.

Save this and message three neighbors this week 🌿

The tree you plant will live 80 years. It'll watch the climate change by 3°C. Choose accordingly.

You're not planting for the Lebanon you know — you're planting for the one your grandchildren will inherit. Some native oaks are already showing dieback at low altitudes as it is.

The rule: as climate warms, plant species from roughly 200m lower than your site's traditional zone — that's their comfort zone thirty years from now.

Save this before your next tree order 🌿

Rewilding isn't neglect. It's the most planned design there is.

People confuse "letting it go" with rewilding — they look the same for the first two years, then diverge violently. Real rewilding is three deliberate steps: assess what's native, remove what's invasive, plant native pioneers, then retreat and let succession do the rest.

An abandoned terrace above Batroun went from cleared invasives in year one to young oaks emerging by year seven. You design the first 3 years. Nature designs the next 100.

Save this for the corner you keep meaning to "tidy" 🌿

The oldest trees in Lebanon are 3,000 years old. They know something we don't.

We plant for the next season. These trees planted for the next century — surviving every drought, every war, every empire, by growing slowly and building deep roots first.

For 3,000 years, humans lived around these trees, not despite them. We forgot that when we started planting fast-growing exotics for instant shade instead.

Save this and plant one native tree this autumn 🌿

One mature tree cools a street by 4°C. Your city is planting zero.

Beirut sits under 3% tree canopy. WHO recommends 30%. That gap is measurable — in AC bills, in heat-related deaths, in summers that keep getting worse.

Carob, native oaks, jacaranda — species that already work here. You don't need a municipal plan to start. One tree, watered through its first two summers, is where canopy begins.

Save this and count your street's trees 🌿

A 200m² forest can grow 10x faster than a natural one.

Urban land is scarce and reforestation takes decades — the Miyawaki method solves both. Plant canopy, sub-canopy, shrub, and ground layers together, dense, native-only, and competition does the rest.

No irrigation needed after year 2. Self-sustaining ecosystem within 3 years, on a plot the size of a parking spot.

Save this for your next unused corner 🌿

From site to soil — this is what a permaculture landscape actually takes to build.
Al Safir Transition Project, in Ghazieh started in 2024, in collaboration with SOILS (Permaculture Association Lebanon). Before any line was drawn, there were weeks of walking the land, reading slope, wind, soil, and what was already alive there. From that came a full base map, sector analysis, and biodiversity study, then self-generated GIS mapping for vegetation, zoning, and slope, all field-verified before design began.

The whole site is built as a polyculture, no single-use zones, every part supporting the one beside it. Water flow, rain gardens, and agroforestry are mapped alongside wind and sun exposure, so the land is worked with, not around. Animal farms, a converted conference room, and the existing fauna and flora all stay part of the system, nothing cleared to make room for a plan.

Save this for the next time you're planning a site from scratch 🌿
